Photo Credit: iStockFor many parents, whether an EV makes sense for a teen driver is less about sticker price than performance. One social media discussion, though, produced a different takeaway. According to many commenters in Reddit's r/ElectricVehicles forum, an older EV with a worn battery and limited range may actually make a lot of sense as a first car. Here's what to knowIn the Reddit thread, the original poster argued that older or used EVs' reduced range could make vehicles such as the Polestar 2, Honda Prologue, and Toyota BZ EVs tempting buys over the next few years. Many of the replies similarly argued that parents should move away from newer or pricier choices and toward used EVs with much shorter ranges.Older Nissan Leafs came up repeatedly, and some commenters also highlighted aging Chevy Bolts as good fits for teen drivers. One commenter wrote, "You can get a really old Bolt/Leaf/Focus with limited range pretty inexpensively, <$5000."Another user put it even more plainly, writing, "Just get them a used Leaf with like 60 miles of range available from its poor tortured battery, that's all they'll need and you can get them for like 4 grand."For a family that only needs a car for daily trips such as school, work, and practice, heavy depreciation can make a limited-range EV a workable option without paying for a newer model.More backgroundIn the thread, the main advantage people focused on was not just low cost. It was the idea that a short-range EV naturally limits how far an inexperienced driver can go.That point surfaced in several Leaf examples. One commenter said a family they knew bought a first-generation Leaf because it cost "next to nothing" and came with "no worries about them roaming too far!" Another described a 2013 Leaf with a 50-mile range for "school and work," adding, "If they ever get in trouble they're always less than an hour away."Others said the same thing more directly. One commenter wrote, "An low range EV is honestly the perfect first car for a teen, keeps them confined to the area while teaching them responsibility and prepping them for an EV future." Another commenter jokingly called it "the unintended geographic fence."Where can I learn more?If you're weighing an older EV for a new driver, these stories take a closer look at the same issues raised in the thread, including cost, range, and day-to-day practicality.• For drivers who mostly stay local, charging where you park often matters more than maximum range.• Even with battery costs, owning an EV undercuts what many families spend on gas cars.• Auto experts say common EV misconceptions still persist, even as used models become easier to justify.Get TCD's free newsletters for easy tips, smart advice, and a chance to earn $5,000 toward home upgrades.
