Image Credit: The AAAn unusual report has come out from the RAC in the UK that states that one in five drivers now struggle to use a traditional road map or atlas when driving. Maps have largely been replaced for many users by sat navs and the likes of Waze, Apple Maps and Google Maps. The report from the RAC also said that nearly 70 percent of UK drivers admit that they make mistakes when driving if they aren't using the sat nav. Drivers now get stressed if they are out driving without using a sat nav.Sat navs have become the main tool that people use if they are out driving to new locations. Before these came to the fore, various road maps or atlases were used for people to plan their route and to give them directions. Depending on the route, some would even memorize where they were going.AdvertisementAdvertisementBut the report suggests UK drivers have become far too reliant on technology and are unable to think a bit for themselves. A deeper dive into the statistics reveals just how many people struggle to use a map now and how often they get stressed. This Is What the Statistics Say About Map UsageImage Credit:Dithira Hettiarachchi/UnsplashThe RAC report said that 20 percent of UK drivers do not feel confident reading a road map or atlas if they are driving to an unfamiliar destination. A further 69 percent of UK drivers admit they make mistakes if they are driving without a sat nav. An eBay poll of 2,000 drivers sheds even more light on these statistics.A third of drivers become stressed if they are driving without a sat nav. Another 45 percent say they either get lost or take a wrong turn if they are navigating without one. A further 29 percent drive further than necessary if they continue a journey without a sat nav, and another 25 percent say they arrive late to their destination.Incredibly, of those surveyed, just five percent still use a physical road atlas or map for navigation. Most tend to use navigation apps on their phone, such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze. Some 46 percent prefer those, while only 29 percent actually rely on the built-in sat nav system in their cars. Drivers are now looking for even more from these apps, on top of basic navigation technology and turn-by-turn directions. What Do Drivers Want From Road Navigation Apps? The RAC report said that 36 percent of drivers value live traffic updates, with another 34 percent saying they like the estimated arrival times. Automatic route recalculation, based on traffic and the speed of the route, is valued by 27 percent of those surveyed. UK drivers clearly want their apps to be a bit more versatile and to offer even more when it comes to navigation.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat is remarkable, however, is that, despite all this, a lot of UK drivers don't trust the sat navs. Many overrule the sat nav if they think they know a quicker route, with 84 percent actually arriving faster when they did ignore the technology. It is ironic that, even though most drivers seem to rely on sat navs, when they ignore them and know the route, they tend to arrive faster than the technology tells them.If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
