The Volkswagen ID.4 is about to get the axe. When it gets a round of updates including a facelift later this year, the electric-only name is going to get the boot. In its place, along with other small changes, will be a new but familiar name. The ID. Tiguan. The CarBuzz spies have just snapped it once again testing in the north, this time in a new color and with most of the electric SUV on display. Extensive Changes, At Least On The Outside CarBuzz/Valnet We're referring to it as a facelift, but it's more than just the face that will get lifted when the new ID.4 officially becomes ID. Tiguan. Every panel on this vehicle appears to be new, making it more of a generational change like the one we're about to see with the VW Atlas. The swoopy lines of the ID.4 have been replaced with sharper straight edges running from the headlight to the tail. The lower section of the doors gets a new sharp line crease as well, instead of the gentle bend in the doors of the current model.CarBuzz/Valnet We can tell that there will be new headlights and a new front bumper, but not exactly what the new parts will look like. Those lower bumper vents that have LED lights? It's just one big sticker. The main lamps are also all but covered with a sticker, with just a tiny portion of the real light showing and the accent/signal light above it. Naturally, the grille is a fake, but we can see a new sharp line hiding under there. Expect it to be an LED light bar.At the rear is more of the same subterfuge. The only parts of the taillights that are real are the small C-shapes that are the brake lights. A sticker goes across the entire hatch, showing that VW is making some changes there, too.One of those changes is the name, obviously. Two big strips of what looks like duct tape are covering where the ID.4 badging used to live and where we believe the ID. Tiguan text will go.The rear bumper is also new, with most of the vehicle's black finish more vinyl. Expect most of the black area to be body color for production, with the exception of the rear diffuser trim. Will An ID.4 By Any Other Name Sell Any Better? CarBuzz/Valnet Earlier this year, we learned that this would be the next VW EV to drop its number for a proper name. The numbers didn't win much brand loyalty or awareness, and were, frankly, a waste of the good names Volkswagen has spent decades turning into brands. The first to get the switch was the ID.2, which became the ID Polo. The 4/Tiguan could be the first in the US to get the branding change. It will also come with upgrades, including pricing that is closer to the gas-powered Tiguan.Along with the bodywork, we expect new motors and battery packs. More power and more range are almost a given at this point, as are faster charging speeds. We're also hoping that interior revisions will include a move back to buttons the way it has changed the ID. Polo, and possibly that model's retro gauge options on the digital dash, too.Expect to see the full reveal in October. Production starts in Germany in November 2026.VW ID Tiguan 9
