Police allegedly clocked a “learner” motorcyclist at 106 mph in a 50 mph zone. The 26-year-old had reportedly held his learner’s permit for only months. Police impounded the motorcycle for 30 days, leaving its rider with a legit release bill. Motorcyclists need to be especially careful. Building skill in the real world takes plenty of experience in different situations. Allegedly doing 106 mph (171 km/h) on a public road probably isn’t among the recommended methods. Police in Australia say that’s exactly what one relatively new rider did, and his motorcycle is now spending a month behind bars as a result. Victoria Police say Cardinia Highway Patrol officers spotted a blue motorcycle speeding on Princes Highway in Longwarry North at around 11:50 a.m. on August 28. Things apparently didn’t get any better from there. The posted speed limit was just 80 km/h (50 mph), meaning the rider was allegedly traveling 91 km/h (57 mph) over the limit. Police subsequently intercepted the rider and discovered another detail that probably didn’t help his case: the 26-year-old Drouin man was still riding on a learner’s permit, which authorities say he’d held for only a few months. The good news, such as it is, is that the incident appears to have ended without a crash or anyone getting hurt. The bad news for the rider is almost comically more expensive. Police say he’s expected to be charged by summons with exceeding the speed limit by 45 km/h (28 mph) or more and dangerous speeding. His motorcycle was also impounded for 30 days. Getting it back won’t be cheap, either. Victoria Police says the rider will have to hand over AU$1,291 (about US$860) just to have the bike released from the impound yard.
