Mitsubishi today announced that the Pajero SUV will return following a hiatus since 2021. The new SUV will debut this fall and will be an all-new, off-road model on a ladder frame derived from Mitsubishi's Triton pickup truck. In addition to the return of the Pajero badge, Mitsubishi simultaneously resurrected the Montero badge.Mitsubishi says the Pajero won't be a single model, as it was in past years. Instead, the Pajero name will be the cornerstone for a lineup of vehicles. In the brand's production roadmap, another two Pajero-based models will be sold. The model line itself is in the early stages of development, and as such, hard facts are slim. Mitsubishi is touting the renewed Pajero as its flagship model, and a sort of rugged go-anywhere vehicle with four-wheel drive. There will also be a unique suspension setup to help further differentiate it from the truck on which it is based. The same can be said of the interior, again with the goal of helping it stand apart from the Triton.Michael Teo Van RunkleThe revival of the brand's two iconic names is part of a new 13-model push from the automaker. Mitsubishi says all 13 new models will arrive by the end of March 2032. Across global markets, Mitsubishi has everything from big SUVs to trucks to tiny economy cars planned. Five will be hybrids, and another five will be fully electric models.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe big question mark for American buyers is whether some of these models will make their way to the US. To say Mitsubishi's presence in America is limited is an understatement. The brand sells the Outlander SUV here and not much else. However, once upon a time, the brand did sell the Montero here as a rugged SUV designed to compete with the likes of Toyota and Nissan. The SUV has kept a small cult following here, but slow sales eventually led to its death. It's possible Mitsubishi is looking to take another crack at the off-road SUV segment with the badge, especially given its popularity in recent years. For now, we'll have to wait until the model's world premiere next month. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on May 30, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
