'I’ve Heard of Mobile Mechanics But…:' Mechanic Can’t Diagnose the Problem. So He Goes to a Texaco

A mechanic is going viral for giving “mobile mechanic” a whole new meaning.

In a TikTok that’s generated over 634,700 views as of this writing, Sonny Norton (@sonnynorton4) shares his confusion about why this mechanic is on top of a moving car to diagnose the car's issue.

He captions the video, “What in the world are they trying to fix?”

The scene he’s gazing upon is one of a car’s hood popped open with a man sprawled across the engine to examine the front wheel. Meanwhile, the car is in motion, and the driver slowly goes through the Texaco parking lot as the mechanic inspects the vehicle.

“I’ve heard of mobile mechanics, but this is getting ridiculous,” one TikTok commenter shared.

The mechanic's method of diagnosing the issue is impressive considering the risk of injury involved. Norton concludes the video by highlighting the presence of an ambulance in the Texaco parking lot.

“I don’t know what they are trying to fix, but I guess they picked a good place to do it I guess,” Norton shares.

How Do Mobile Mechanics Operate?

Mobile mechanics are a great option for anybody wanting convenience and not wanting to deal with an auto repair shop. These mobile mechanics can reduce the hassle of car repair and maintenance as the service provider comes directly to your location, Capital One reports.

Mobile mechanics will often service battery replacements, brake repairs, oil changes, and run diagnostics for any warning signs the car has, Instant Car Fix shares. In addition to routine repairs, mobile mechanics can address urgent issues.

Can Mobile Mechanics Do It All?

While the convenience of mobile mechanics is a major selling point, there are some limitations as to what they can do. “Not everything can be fixed on the spot – some fixes need the gear you only find in a traditional garage,” Salt Lake City Mechanic states.

Capital One notes that not all jobs can be done safely or efficiently outside of a garage. This includes complex repairs that require highly specialized equipment and multiple days of service.

Additionally, the service location must be flat and a safe space to work. Weather can also be a factor, so it’s important to consider it when determining the location for a mobile mechanic to work.

What Happened To All the Texaco Gas Stations?

The viral video took place at a Texaco, which left commenters delighted to see the business still existed.

“Omg a TEXACO!! Haven’t seen one in years,” one TikTok commenter shared.

“I’m more impressed there's a TEXACO,” another replied.

According to XMap, there are 1,500 Texaco gas stations still operating as of Aug. 19. The state with the most Texaco locations is Texas, which has 512 locations.

This is a drastic drop from the 1930s, when Texaco had 45,000 locations across the United States, Texaco Tanker Project reports. The number of locations has dropped over the years as Texaco only operates in 16 states.

In 2001, Texaco merged with Chevron for $45 billion, the FTC reports. With this merger between Texaco and Chevron, locations have been converted to feature both brands across the United States. Texaco is primarily featured in the southern and western states.
