Slate Auto's pickup truck has a number of things that have caught the public's attention. It has just two doors in a world where four doors seem almost mandatory. It has almost no features inside its boxy body. It's also supposed to be really affordable. When it launched, the company was claiming the ability to get one for less than $20,000, though that was with the now defunct federal tax credit. Since then, Slate has given estimates under $30,000. These have all been estimates, but we'll know the final price soon, because Slate is about to take final orders for customer trucks.Slate When Reservation Holders Can Order Since the reveal, Slate has been taking reservations for the new truck. These reservations were not orders. These were simply placeholders, so that when it was time to make a final order for a truck, you would have priority in placing one and, in turn, receiving a completed truck. Additionally, those reservations were just $50 and fully refundable, so they weren't binding orders. This week, Slate emailed existing reservation holders to inform them that there's finally a date to submit final orders. It also made the announcement on social media, as shown in the Instagram post above. The big date is June 24. One of the CarBuzz reporters has a reservation, and the instructions sent to holders said that they can go to a website to find an expected delivery date and also the ability to lock in that date with a $250 deposit, or $300 for people ordering without an existing reservation. Even then, anyone pre-ordering won't be locked into a specific configuration or financing until closer to when the vehicle will be delivered.wasn't sure I could announce this but it's in the FAQ "We’ll announce pricing on June 24, plus more exciting news." I'll be at a Slate event that day for this news and more. Tell your Slate loving friends to give me a follow that day for all the info. They can unfollow me on June 25. His post is above. This does make sense, since it would be a little weird to be asking for more money and more concrete orders without letting people know more precisely what they're going to be paying. The First Trucks Arrive This Year The reveal video confirmed once again that Slate plans to deliver the first orders in the fourth-quarter of this year. That could mean as early as sometime in October, or as late as the end of December. Either way, production of final models will start this year to meet that target. The final trucks will be extremely basic, as they'll all have a single rear motor, no stereo, manual windows, and in the two-door pickup configuration. The one option before it goes down the line is the choice of battery pack sizes offering either a 150-mile or 240-mile range. It does at least come with air conditioning and heat, though. Additionally, Slate will offer many features as optional upgrades, such as speakers, power windows, and even rear seats that can be added with a rollover structure and roof, all of which can be installed by the owner after purchase. Some, such as the optional roofs, Slate will install for you even before delivery.
