A woman is going viral on TikTok after showing off the surprisingly sweet ride she scored through a Budget "mystery rental." Kayley Slicer (@kayslice1) said she booked the mystery option and brought viewers along as she headed to pick up whatever car she’d been assigned. "I’m going to take you along to see what the mystery car is going to be. It could be anything," Slicer says, adding that even an electric vehicle was a possibility. When she arrived to check in, Slicer said an employee quickly let her know she’d be driving an EV. Moments later, she found the exact car waiting for her: a Genesis. Slicer explained she was only traveling for a day, but said Budget still agreed to "hook her up." "I literally did the mystery car rental. It was $25, and I’m going to get a Genesis," she says. Viewers were quick to envy the deal. As of this writing, the clip has pulled in more than 712,400 views. What’s A Budget ‘Mystery Car’ Rental? Budget’s "Mystery Car" rental is exactly what it sounds like. You book the rate—though it’s not clear it will always be $25—without knowing what you’ll be driving until you show up to pick it up. The tradeoff is the price. According to those who have used the service before, these reservations are typically discounted, sometimes landing at or below what you’d pay for a compact. Though this may vary by Budget location, the Budget Atlanta website notes that the only guarantee—at least for those renting cars in this city—is size and basic practicality. It states that any vehicle you choose will seat at least four people and accommodate a couple of bags. Beyond that, though, what kind of vehicle you’re assigned can vary widely. Budget’s own website claims that everything from hybrid cars to midsize electric cars to standard sports cars is on the table. The process itself is simple. You select the "Mystery Car" class when booking, and the specific vehicle is revealed at pickup. That surprise factor is part of the appeal, especially for travelers who prioritize cost over a specific model. Pricing is where this option tends to stand out. Rates are typically comparable to economy cars or slightly lower, which is why it appeals to budget-minded renters seeking a solid upgrade. Some, like Slicer, say they’ve ridden off in vehicles like a Genesis G80E or other higher-end models, though nothing at that level is promised. There are, of course, a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. As Slicer mentioned, drivers using the "Mystery Car" rental feature often have to pay upfront, and availability varies by location. You also have to be OK with relinquishing any say over what you’ll be driving. That said, if you’re a flexible traveler or taking a quick trip, the gamble can still be worth it. Commenters Share Pros And Cons Of Budget Mystery Car Program Slicer’s video drew a wave of reactions from viewers, including some who said their own mystery rental experiences didn’t go quite as smoothly. "I did that one time and got a 15-passenger van," one viewer recalled. "It was just me. Never again." "I always do the mystery car, and they ALWAYS give me the biggest pickup truck they have. In NYC. I’m punching the air every single time," another woman shared. "I’ve done this twice and once got a Hyundai Ioniq electric, which was pretty nice, but the other time I got a gigantic Ram 2500 truck that I could barely see over the steering wheel," a third commenter explained. "I got a 15-passenger van," a fourth added. Still, not everyone had horror stories. Several viewers said the gamble worked in their favor. "Avi[s] did this to me, too, with a Genesis. I booked a basic economy car and got a $90K SUV," one woman said. "I did this and got a Tesla for $100 for 4 days!" another wrote. "So far, doing this, I have ended up with an electric Mustang SUV, a Jaguar, and a Kia Soul. It’s really luck of the draw," a third commenter noted. "I booked a mystery car for $19," a fourth shared. "Ended up with a Range Rover Sport." Motor1 has reached out to Slicer via a direct message on TikTok and to Budget through email. We will update this story if either party replies.
