At the time, the company said it would have 1,250 hp and a price tag of about $6 million. An ambitious project, for sure, but its goal was to apply everything that Red Bull Racing had learned in Formula 1 into a road car.Dubbed the RB17, it was to be designed by Adrian Newey, and team principal Christian Horner said it would be shown by 2024. Ironically, Newey and Horner are no longer associated with the company, but the project continued, nonetheless. Four years after the announcement, the car has finally been revealed, and the specs are pretty epic.Red Bull Advanced TechnologiesFrom Twin-Turbo V8 to Naturally-Aspirated V10Initial reports said that the RB17 was to be powered by a twin-turbo V8. In production form, however, it swapped a pair of turbos for two extra cylinders. Built by Cosworth, its V10 is unassisted by boost, although it does benefit from electrification. It's effectively a Le Mans hypercar, but unbound by rules.AdvertisementAdvertisementSo, was it a V10 from the start? Well, apparently not, according to Cosworth's Commercial Director, Chris Willoughby. Speaking to Motor1, the program had all the freedom to choose whatever powertrain configuration the team wanted. That's the perk given to low-volume automakers that produce less than 1,000 cars per year. Ironically, it's that freedom that made choosing the powertrain difficult in the first place."[That freedom] was a little bit of a problem, because when you come to looking at the alternative engine configurations and the design, and how it integrates with the car, you don't have anything to sort of crystallize ideas around. We went through pretty much every single engine. We had V6 turbos, we had V12s… and the only way to really decide what's best is to go into each configuration in a fair amount of detail in the analysis," said Willoughby.Red Bull Advanced TechnologiesWhy the V10 WonRed Bull admitted that it was a tough choice between turbo or naturally-aspirated power. The reason the latter won was because of response. While turbos easily boost output, torque delivery isn't as immediate. A naturally aspirated engine will always be inherently more responsive, and Willoughby admitted that it's hard to beat the soundtrack of a V10.The result? A 4.5-liter that revs up to 15,000 rpm - not that far off V10 Formula 1 cars from back in the day. It then punches out 1,200 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque, with an extra helping of power from an electric motor.
