The iX5 60 is set to be the first fully electric X5. Uwe Fischer/BMW AG/dpaBMW has unveiled the fifth generation of its X5 SUV at its Spartanburg plant in the US, announcing the launch of the first variants for late November.The Munich-based manufacturer wants to increase everyday practicality with modest gains in length - now an even more stately 4.99 metres - and wheelbase, now 3.04 metres.BMW is also promising more in-car entertainment in the infotainment system from its Neue Klasse range, including a display strip beneath the windscreen and, for the first time, a dedicated front passenger screen. Extensive autonomous driving capability on motorways and in urban areas is also set to reduce driver fatigue.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat is intended to make the X5 a true all-rounder in the model range, however, is its powertrain variety: it is the first BMW ever to be offered with petrol and diesel engines, as a plug-in hybrid, with an electric drivetrain and with a hydrogen fuel cell.Sales begin at the end of the year, with prices at home in Germany starting at €94,800, with two straight-six engines, each with three litres of displacement and a 48-volt mild-hybrid boost.In diesel form, the X5 40d produces 210 kW (286 hp) and reaches a top speed of 230 km/h, according to BMW. The petrol version is called the X5 40 and is listed with 294 kW (400 hp) and a top speed of 250 km/h.A second wave of models will follow from spring, starting at higher prices (€102,800 in Germany), comprising two plug-in hybrids with up to 450 kW (612 hp) and an electric range of up to 102 km.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe iX5 60 is set to be the first fully electric X5. That battery is said to offer a standard range of up to 845 km and a maximum charging capacity of 460 kW - currently unmatched among German manufacturers.As a fifth variant, BMW has announced a hydrogen fuel cell version for later in the X5's career, with a range of around 750 km and, for the first time, all-wheel drive. A V8 petrol engine for the M version is also said to be coming soon.After nearly 30 years and more than three million units sold, the X5 is hardly an unknown quantity, but BMW has also given the design a fresh sharpening. And for anyone who still has trouble identifying it, the new light signature should help: the LED elements of the daytime running lights now form a distinctive X.
