2027 GMC Sierra 1500 First LookGeneral MotorsThe full-size pickup truck wars are real, and they are brutal. Into this fray, GM will introduce its next generation of trucks later this year: the bread-and-butter Chevrolet Silverado family for the masses and the premium GMC Sierra lineup for the more discerning. We already got our first look at what to expect from the 2027 Silverado 1500: a new look and a pair of new V-8 engines. So it should come as no surprise that the Sierras sport a new—but different from Chevy—look but the same powertrain lineup that includes new small-block V-8 engines among the four powertrain choices. So how does the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 differentiate itself? GMC executives insist the Sierra buyer is a different animal, one who researches their purchase thoroughly and expects more in terms of looks, materials, amenities, and technology.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 for those who go off-road.General MotorsThe current Sierra introduced the MultiPro tailgate with six distinct functions in 2018 as its whiz-bang feature to draw attention. Mike MacPhee, global vice president of Buick and GMC, says the tailgate has been enhanced with a lighter weight and more tie-downs. The new truck introduces innovations like an articulating infotainment screen that conceals a hidden storage cubby and a two-tiered center console. But the real difference is that the team took a strong truck and one-upped every aspect, from powertrains to tire size, digital displays, and the audio system.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile the Silverado is offered in seven trims ranging from $45,195 to $74,595, the Sierra buyer will have six choices. The key trims are the Denali and AT4 brands, which have seen their relative volumes double over the past 10 years. The trim walk goes from Pro, to Elevation priced in the heart of the market, to AT4, Denali, and then AT4X and Denali Ultimate. What Do the Trucks Look Like?In terms of design, the trucks needed to take a step forward, GM design director Holt Ware said. They have a more powerful stance with a raised hood to accommodate the larger engines and a raised vertical grille and front fenders to accentuate it. They sport signature LED headlights and taillights with an animated lighting dance. Quad exhaust tips are available. The bed has best-in-class volume, according to GM.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 interiorGeneral MotorsThe design team went for more differentiation between trims, too, with machined grilles and 22-inch wheels for Denalis while the raised AT4 gets a unique hood and wheels for better approach and departure angles. The AT4X is the most rugged expression with a 2-inch suspension lift, new fascia, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, new Multimatic jounce bumpers (bump shocks) for high-speed impacts over the big stuff, and front and rear e-locking differentials.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate interior.General MotorsStep Inside the 2027 GMC SierraInside, the emphasis is on nicer materials in cabs that have all been completely redesigned.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Denali Ultimate was designed to be cross-shopped against luxury sedans, with open-pore birch wood, a 16-speaker Bose premium audio system, heated and ventilated seats, and an available panoramic sunroof. It comes with three years of Super Cruise, the hands-free driver assistance system. The AT4 has mahogany wood trim, perforated patterns, piping, quilting, embroidery, enhanced bolstering on the seats, a sport flat-bottom steering wheel, and a standard panoramic sunroof.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate.General MotorsThere are 60 inches of screen. The driver has a 12.2-inch split-screen display as well as a 15.0-inch head-up display. The star attraction is the I6.3-inch infotainment screen in the center, which articulates to reveal a hidden storage area tucked in behind while still offering a slimmer display. The passenger also has an 11.5-inch display with an articulating cover to hide it. This is a big upgrade from the current truck's basic 7.0-inch and 13.4-inch touchscreens.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Ultimate Denali center console serves as work space.General MotorsThe new MultiPro center console is multi-tiered and opens to create an expanded work surface while making it easier to manage devices and gear. There are wireless chargers, a new steering wheel, hard and soft controls, and more storage overall.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 equipped to tow.General MotorsWhat's Under the Hood of the 2027 GMC Sierra?Like the 2027 Silverado 1500, the new Sierra goes on sale late this year with four powertrain options. The new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V-8s replace the 355-hp 5.3-liter and 420-hp 6.2-liter Gen V engines on the 2026 model. The sixth-generation small-block V-8 shares parts with the new LS6 6.7-liter V-8 engine on the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, which delivers 535 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. GMC is not yet providing specs for the Sierra. The larger-displacement engines have the power to tow and haul, accelerate quickly, and sound good doing it.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe other engine choices include an enhanced 2.7-liter TurboMax I-4 and the 305-hp, 495 lb-ft Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6 for efficiency and torque for towing and long hauls. All are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, including the I-4 that previously paired with an eight-speed. The engines will be built at GM factories in Flint, Michigan, Tonawanda, New York, and St. Catharines, Ontario. There are no plans for a hybrid. Executive chief engineer for full-size trucks and SUVs Mark Dickens says hybrids account for less than 1 percent of full-size pickup sales—although that number is expected to grow as more become available—and he says the diesel is a more efficient choice.Cargo box sizes remain the same as the previous-generation Sierra and include the 69.9-inch short bed, the 79.4-inch standard bed, and the 98.2-inch long bed. Availability of bed length depends on which cab you choose from among the usual single-, double-, and crew-cab configurations.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 seats.General MotorsWhy Is the Sierra Important to GM?GM builds full-size trucks in Indiana and Ontario and will add production in Michigan in 2027. The automaker sees the Sierra as a benchmark, a premium truck with full capability, strength, and refinement for the discerning customer who expects more.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Sierra is the highest-volume vehicle for the brand and the clearest expression of what it stands for. The truck had a record sales year in the U.S. in 2025 and gained market share. The Silverado and Sierra combined account for almost a third of GM's sales in the U.S. GMC executives expect momentum to continue with the new model, noting higher gas prices have not impeded sales. "I think this is the truck against which all other trucks will be measured," global marketing director for Buick and GMC Patrick Finnegan said.
