• Chevrolet was rumored to be planning to expand the Corvette brand to include an SUV, an electric model, and possibly even a four-door fastback.
  • While GM never formally confirmed these plans, a new report claims that those additional variants have been scrapped.
  • We will likely still see the Corvette add powertrains, and there are already murmurs about the upcoming C9 generation that will replace the current C8.

The imagined future of a broad lineup of Corvette-badged SUVs, sedans, and electric vehicles that some of us dreamed about—or perhaps dreaded—is no longer set to become a reality. GM’s long-rumored plans to build out the Corvette brand as a broader lineup have been shelved, according to a report by GM Authority citing sources within the company.

We’ve been discussing the possibility of a Corvette SUV for years now, and this Porsche Cayenne–fighting model appears to be the most significant casualty of this news. Electric power had also been discussed for a future Corvette, and Chevrolet does currently offer two hybrid powertrains in the C8 Corvette, but it now sounds like GM’s upcoming electric-vehicle platforms won’t be making their way into any models with a Corvette badge. The report even mentions rumors of a four-door Corvette sedan that now isn’t likely to ever see the light of day.

This potential Corvette spin-off series could have been a cash cow for GM, much like how the large sales volumes and profits of Porsche’s SUV models help fund its sports-car development. But perhaps GM’s decision hinges on the softer demand for EVs lately, or the backlash it anticipated from Corvette loyalists who might think that offering a Corvette-badged SUV sullies the iconic name. Because GM had never officially announced these plans to begin with, it’s all a bit murky, and Chevrolet representatives said they had nothing to add to this speculation when Car and Driver reached out for comment.

Plus, even without these additional body styles and powertrain choices, it’s not as if the existing Corvette lineup lacks variety. The current C8-generation car offers a wide range of models from the base Stingray and Grand Sport all the way up to the hardcore Z06 and mega-powerful ZR1 variants. Chevy is also surely hard at work on the C9-generation Corvette, as it has already previewed future Corvette models with a recent concept car called the California Corvette.
