(New Amperex) recently posted a video on Weibo and Douyin declaring, "ZXMOTO x New Amperex, stay tuned, the show is just beginning!" The news has fueled speculation across the industry about a potential partnership.On the evening of April 8, a representative for CATL confirmed that New Amperex is a subsidiary, noting that the two sides are indeed in preliminary discussions regarding a collaboration on electric motorcycles.The name New Amperex may be relatively unfamiliar to the public, but its shareholder list tells the full story. Established less than five years ago, the company is backed by the global leader in power batteries and its "sibling," ATL.In 1999, Robin Zeng, CATL's chairman, co-founded ATL (Amperex Technology Limited) with partners. In 2011, ATL's power battery team spun off to form CATL. By 2015, ATL had transferred its entire 15% stake in CATL to Ningbo United, rendering the two entities completely independent. In terms of business, ATL focuses primarily on consumer batteries, while CATL specializes in power and energy storage batteries.In 2021, the two parties joined forces to establish New Amperex. According to the Tianyancha app, the company was founded in July 2021 with a registered capital of 5 billion yuan. Its controlling shareholder, Xiamen Xinnenghe Technology Co., Ltd., holds an 85% stake; CATL owns 70% of Xiamen Xinnenghe, while ATL holds the remaining 30% through a wholly-owned subsidiary.Industry observers note that by negotiating an electric motorcycle partnership through its subsidiary New Amperex, CATL is extending its battery expertise into the high-end electric motorcycle sector.Back in January, CATL told investors that the company and ATL have complementary strengths and are fully promoting electrification in application scenarios such as electric two-wheelers. This track-level electric motorcycle project with ZXMOTO represents a strategic play in its push into the premium two-wheeler market.
