Caterham Launches Miami Edition at Grand Prix Caterham is back at a Grand Prix weekend for the first time since its ill-fated F1 team folded in 2014. The British lightweight sports car maker is unveiling a Miami Special Edition Seven, destined for the race track only. Finished in Aqua custom paintwork with VibrantPink and white racing stripes, and Miami decals, just 12 examples are being built, ten of which will be on sale right after the race through Caterham’s U.S. dealers. The cars also feature the Miami International Autodrome circuit layout, and the city’s name embroidered in the headrests, along with a engine bay plaque bearing the names and signatures of the two engineers who hand built them. The Seven Miami Special Edition is based on the Seven R and powered by Ford’s two-liter Duratec engine in 213 hp tune. Weighing just over 1200 lbs, Caterham claims it is good for zero to sixty in 3.8 seconds, and a top speed of 136 mph. “Miami has become a global hub for elite motorsport and luxury automotive culture, so to have this moment to unveil the Miami Special Edition is truly unique,” says Trevor Steel, Senior Vice President of Operations, Caterham Cars. “This car represents the very best of lightweight British engineering, and seeing the car launched and on display at the race weekend will be a significant moment for our brand.” The car will be on display on Race Street, in the West Campus of the the Miami International Autodrome from Friday May 1st, and Caterham will be hoping that the brand’s reappearance at an F1 circuit is more successful than its previous outings. The Caterham F1 team was formed in under owner Tony Fernandes, originally with the name Lotus Racing, but assorted legal issues over the naming rights led him to rename the team Caterham, which Fernandes had recently purchased. 2012 saw Caterham F1 finish the season in tenth place, in 2013 it was 11th, and in 2014 it achieved the dubious honor of becoming the team with the record for most starts without scoring a point. In October the team went into administration, and despite various rescue bids, failed to make the grid again the following season.
