There are people who say there aren’t enough public EV chargers, but they don’t know how many chargers there are. There are also people who say the public EV chargers are all too slow, but they don’t know how many fast chargers there are. In looking at the Alternative Fuels Data Center website, which is operated by the US Department of Energy (DOE), its data shows there are 71,482 public EV fast chargers in the US now. They are situated at 15,031 locations. Image Credit: Alternative Fuels Data Center According to the same site, there are 274,665 public EV chargers, which obviously includes both slow and fast chargers. It does not include all the home EV chargers, which might be over 800,000 or more. Among the 274,665 public EV chargers, some are ultrafast chargers with charging rates of 350 kW or more; they can charge an EV from 10–80 percent in less than about 25 minutes, if the EV can accept such a fast charging rate. According to the same site, there are about 11,000 ultrafast EV chargers at 2,386 stations. For those of us who follow EVs, we know public EV charging expansion is a great success story. Even in a time when EVs themselves are not well supported by the US federal government and most US states don’t have EV incentives, public EV charging is steadily growing. The progress has taken place during a time when one US president actively opposes EVs and clean energy. He has even publicly lied about electric vehicles to attempt to smear them. When there are enough public EV chargers available, and ones that can fast charge or ultrafast charge, this capability supports EV drivers on long-distance trips. EV adoption is not only about the vehicles themselves. Part of the resistance and hesitation for people who cling to gas and diesel vehicles, despite how harmful fossil fuels are to human health and the whole planet, is how uneducated they are about all the electric vehicle benefits. As public EV charging infrastructure continues to expand, and it will, more and more members of the public will begin to understand and choose electric vehicles because they are superior technology and they are better for both people and the planet.
