The 2027 Rivian R1 Adds Captain Chairs, New ColorsRivianRivian has been making waves in the automotive world ever since its first vehicle rolled off the assembly line back in 2018. The California-based electric vehicle startup is looking stronger than ever these after the recent launch of the R2 line—but Rivian hasn't forgotten about its flagship R1T and R1S, either. The electric pickup truck and SUV siblings are getting a refresh for the 2027 model year, and a simplified trim level scheme is a big part of the updates.Instead of naming each model by its drivetrain as in the past, Rivian will now sell the R1 in Premium, Performance, and Quad varieties. Premium models will sport the 533-horsepower, 610-lb-ft of torque dual-motor drivetrain, while Performance models will feature 850 horsepower and 1103 lb-ft of torque from the tri-motor setup. Quad trim models's motor setup should be fairly self-explanatory, and those four motors combine to make 1025 hp and 1198 lb-ft.RivianThere are also interior packages that correspond with each trim level. Performance and Quad trim R1 models are available with Slate Sky Signature, Black Mountain Signature, and Ocean Coast Signature interiors; Premium trim R1 models will now be offered with Black Mountain or Ocean Coast interiors, which come sans some of the more premium textures in the Signature versions.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd in a big move for customers, Rivian will now offer second-row captain chairs in R1S models for 2027. The automaker says dual second-row seats have been its most requested interior feature by far, and now, it's delivering them—at a starting price of $4000 for Premium models and $1500 for Performance and Quad trims. The new six-seat configuration is built around a center pass-through; Rivian has made sure a surfboard and skis can still pass through the center of the cabin while all six passengers are seated. Each throne is heated, folds flat, and retains full car seat tie-downs, too. Second-row bench seating remains available on both interiors of the R1S Premium and Black Mountain Signature on the R1S Performance and Quad.RivianOther key 2027 model year updates include a new Goodyear all-season tire and 20-inch wheel that come standard on R1T Premium, and are available as a no-cost option on R1T Performance. The tire and wheel combination is responsible for new range figures across the board; it delivers an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles on Premium, 380 miles on Premium Long Range, and 348 miles on Performance models. Finally, a new color has joined the team. Esker Silver was first launched on the R2 earlier this year, and it's now coming to the R1 lineup. It will replace LA Silver as the base silver color for all trim levels of R1. Pricing has also increased somewhat for the 2027 model year, as R1S models now start at $83,990 and R1T models start at $79,990. That's an increase of $5105 for both models. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
