The 2 Series Gran Coupe is a luxury subcompact sedan that serves as an entry point for BMW's lineup.Although the 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn't adhere to certain aspects of BMW tradition, it also has tech, design, and performance that give it a relation to higher-end BMW models. Rivals to the 2 Series Gran Coupe include the Acura Integra, Audi A3, and Mercedes-Benz CLA.What's NewThe 2 Series Gran Coupe received a major update for 2025, gaining fresh styling, updated features, and improved engine and chassis hardware. The vehicle is expected to carry over mostly unchanged into 2027.AdvertisementAdvertisementThis page will be updated with more insights and photos as information becomes available. What We ThinkIn the shadow of the excellent rear-drive 2 Series coupe, the front-drive-based 2 Series Gran Coupe has a lot to prove. Earlier versions of BMW's smallest four-door never felt especially convincing, though recent updates have moved it closer to entry-level luxury expectations.Even though it doesn't drive like a classic BMW, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is entertaining. Extra power and torque for the base engine are welcome, and the upgraded engine is notably strong. One blemish is the dual-clutch automatic, which can feel clumsy in certain situations, especially at low speeds. Ride quality, however, is improved, even with the sport suspension.AdvertisementAdvertisementStyling remains a bit awkward; other BMW models and small luxury cars simply look better. Inside, though, the cabin does a respectable job of channeling pricier BMWs, with plenty of tech and upscale touches, even if some materials feel slightly cheap.A relatively low starting price gives BMW's most affordable car appeal, but adding desirable options pushes the cost up quickly. The 2 Series Gran Coupe belongs on an entry-level luxury shopper's list, just not necessarily at the top.Top-Ranked Competitors:Audi A3Mercedes-Benz CLA-ClassAcura IntegraLexus ISMotorTrend TestedEvery 2027 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but the powertrain is tuned differently for different models.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe base 228 has 252 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, with FWD standard and xDrive AWD optional. The FWD version should accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.1 seconds, and the AWD model should hit the mark in 5.8 seconds. In M235 specification, the car has 312 hp and 301 lb-ft of torque with standard xDrive AWD. In MotorTrend testing, the M235 Gran Coupe hustled from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.MPGs and RangeFuel economy for the 228 Gran Coupe is rated at approximately 27/39 mpg city/highway with FWD and 26/38 mpg with AWD. Driving ranges on a full tank of gas are about 425 miles and 410 miles, respectively. The M235 Gran Coupe is more powerful but less efficient, returning 24/33 mpg and about 370 miles of driving range.Safety and Driver Assist FeaturesStandard FeaturesAll 2 Series Gran Coupe models include front automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, and road sign recognition among their standard features.Available FeaturesDriver assist technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, semi-automated lane changes, and front, side, and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Additionally, a hands-free driving assist system for traffic jams is available.Cargo Space and Interior RoomSubcompact sedans aren't expected to provide much space, but the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a notably small back seat. The four-door-coupe design compromises rear passenger room.AdvertisementAdvertisementLegroom (front/rear)Cargo Space (trunk)2027 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe41.8/32.2 inches13.8 cubic feet2027 Audi A341.2/35.2 inches10.9 cubic feet2027 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class EV42.2/33.6 inches10.3 cubic feetTechnologyInfotainmentA 10.3-inch gauge display and 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen are combined under a single pane of curved glass on the 2 Series Gran Coupe's dashboard. A semi-autonomous parking system is also available.ValueStandard FeaturesPricing for the 2027 BMW 228 Gran Coupe starts at about $42,000 with FWD. Standard exterior features include 18-inch wheels, power-folding side mirrors, and full LED lighting.AdvertisementAdvertisementInside, the car has perforated vegan leather upholstery, a dual-display infotainment panel, dual-zone automatic climate control, one-touch windows all around, multicolor ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, and 12-speaker audio. Choosing xDrive AWD adds $2,000.Recommended TrimAlthough the sporty M235 Gran Coupe is appealing, at about $50,000 to start it's too close in price to the M240i true coupe, which drives much better. Our choice for a 2 Series Gran Coupe is with the 228 xDrive, but rivals like the Acura Integra and Audi A3 are also worth consideration. The FWD BMW?Much of BMW's driver-focused reputation is based on only building vehicles with rear-wheel drive—at least, that used to be true. Of course, there are many all-wheel-drive BMWs, but those have generally been built on rear-drive-based platforms. However, because it uses the UKL platform that also underpins Mini models like the Countryman, the 2 Series Gran Coupe breaks tradition by equipping front-wheel drive as standard on the base 228 model.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe platform can support AWD but is natively FWD. There's nothing expressly wrong with that, but it doesn't allow for dynamics like most other BMW models—including the genuinely rear-wheel-drive 2 Series coupe.
