Did you know that across all generations, fewer than 32,000 Dodge Vipers were produced? From start to finish, the Dodge Viper was a force to be reckoned with, as in its earliest renditions, it would kill you if you weren't careful. That reputation stuck throughout its lifetime. In the roughly two-decade-long production run, there were many renditions, with some being more potent than others and some being rarer than others. One of the rarest ever created was built to celebrate its victory in the now-defunct FIA GT Championship and was called the Dodge Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition, and it's rarer than hen's teeth. Remember When Chrysler Went Racing? LBI Limited Although absent from the grid today, Chrysler secured many victories across several respected racing series while it was present. Of its many accolades, two stand out in this context: Chrysler's GT2 class victory in the 1997 FIA GT Championship and its class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans the following year. These victories were achieved with an iconic race-prepped Dodge Viper, the Dodge Viper GTS-R.In the mid-1990s, Chrysler approved a racing program centered on the second-generation Dodge Viper GTS, which was still under development, allowing both the road-going model and the race car to share interchangeable components. Only 57 Dodge Viper GTS-Rs were built, and the race-ready Vipers quickly became a dominant force in the GT2 class and in various endurance racing series, securing an overall victory at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Interestingly, while the track-only GTS-R dominated the Nürburgring, so too did its road-going counterparts, ultimately dominating the Ring long before the Ford Mustang GTD.Bring A Trailer The most significant and earliest victories for the Dodge Viper GTS-R were the 1997 FIA GT Championship, the inaugural season of the then-new racing series, and its GT2 class victory at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Although it was not the last victory the GTS-R would bring in its career, these victories were milestones for the company, so much so that a special-edition Dodge Viper was produced to commemorate Chrysler's victories. A Race Car For The Road... Kind Of Bring A TrailerNot long after Viper Team Oreca's victory at Le Mans in 1998, the public was introduced to the special offshoot of the second-gen Viper that closely resembled the potent American sports car that had dominated its class that year. The starting point of this rare viper was the 1998 Dodge Viper GTS, which commanded 450 hp and 490 lb-ft of torque from its 8.0-liter V10 engine.Dodge In contrast to the already potent Viper, the GTS GT2 Championship Edition produced 460 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque from its slightly revised V10 engine, which benefited from a new air filter and different intake tubing. The slight changes made to its powertrain resulted in a marginal improvement in performance over the Dodge Viper it was based on.The most defining feature of this limited-production Viper was its design, one that closely resembled the race car it was inspired by, so much so that the public regularly, and incorrectly, referred to it as the GTS-R. There was merit to that, considering that one of its many visually defining features was a plaque affixed to the center console with the "GTS-R" moniker and the production number engraved on it.Dodge By far the defining aspect of this Viper was its physique. The defining aspect of the GTS GT2 Championship Edition was the same color scheme and dual stripes as the GTS-R race car, both of which were accentuated by an aerodynamic package comprising a front splitter, dive planes, side skirts, and a large rear wing. No Viper, at the time, had the same aerodynamic package as the GTS GT2 Championship Edition. It would be only a year later until the public could have a nearly identical aerodynamic package on their Viper in the form of the American Club Racer package. Compared to the standard Dodge Viper GTS, the Dodge Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition was more powerful and had the looks to back up its greater athleticism, while its production cap also made it far more exclusive. Rarer Than Any Second-Gen Viper Bring A Trailer Only 100 examples of the 1998 Dodge Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition were ever produced. That limited production run makes it the second rarest second-generation Dodge Viper ever produced. The 1996 Dodge Viper RT/10 Carroll Shelby models were the rarest version of the second-gen Viper, with only 19 built.Over the last five years, we've seen a handful of examples sold at auction, and a few that failed to meet reserve. As you might expect, the GTS GT2 Championship Edition demanded more than the standard GTS when both were new, with the race-inspired Viper reportedly costing $15,000 more. Today, they are worth far more than that.Bring A Trailer According to Hagerty's valuation tool, the 1998 Dodge Viper GT2 Championship Edition in good condition is worth $111,000, whereas the GTS trim from the same year and condition is worth roughly $55,000. In a condition worthy of winning an award at a Concours d'Elegance event, it's worth nearly $200,000.In the last two years, we've seen multiple examples of the Dodge Viper GT2 Championship Edition auctioned off. One example, with fewer than 11,000 miles, sold for $112,750 in January 2025 and then sold again in May (with 11,111 miles) for $132,000.Bring A Trailer Another example, with 8,000 miles, sold for $160,000, which wasn't far from the price of the most expensive GT2 Championship Edition, which sold for $193,000 in 2023. While prices vary, there hasn't been a single example of this racy Viper selling for under $100,000 in the last five years. Dodge Revived It In The Viper's Final Moments BringATrailer After production of the Dodge Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition, Dodge continued producing one of America's favorite sports cars for the next two decades. All in all, the Dodge Viper's production lasted 25 years, and for many of us, that wasn't long enough. In its final year, Dodge introduced five special edition models to mark the end of the Viper.BringATrailer One of those five was another Viper built to commemorate the 1998 Dodge Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition. In a similar vein, this modern Viper featured a Pearl White body with Dodge's Extreme Aero Package, accentuated by two Blue Pearl GTS stripes. And just like the 1998 Viper it was inspired by, only 100 examples were planned for production that same year.
