It simply said 'Lord Vader, your car is ready.' Above it was a gleaming, gloss-black Corvette-powered (sort of) full-size sedan that the police loved to drive. Perhaps it's the association with the Caprice that gave it an extra air of authority, and the deep black paint was downright menacing. It's one of the many memorable ads from the formative years of many. Today, it's an's an aspirational car for those too young to buy it when it was new, but are now old enough to own it. Also, it still looks as imposing as it did over 30 years ago, mainly because the traditional full-size American car has gone extinct.Spexx/Bring a TrailerThe BackstoryThis generation of Impala SS wasn't just a Caprice that was painted black and given a floor shifter (in '96). It's far more than that, with upgrades that made it a true step above the car it was built on. The SS literally had a cop motor, along with cop tires, cop suspension, and cop shocks. It was then lowered, beefed up, and given unique styling touches such as blacked-out trim, 17-inch alloys, its own grille, and that Impala SS badge on the quarter panels.AdvertisementAdvertisementBuilt from 1994 to 1996, about 70,000 of these were made out of nearly 690,000 final-generation Caprices. It's not totally rare, but it represents only a small percentage of all the Caprices made at the time. Classic.com currently places market values at around $25,500, so it's still a pretty accessible classic. However, the one we saw up for sale on Bring a Trailer is practically a museum piece. That's because it's traveled, if you can use that word, less than 150 miles over the last 30 years. We'd love to hear the backstory behind it, because it takes a lot of restraint not to drive one of these.Spexx/Bring a TrailerThe OfferSpecificationDetailMakeChevroletModelImpala SSYear1996Mileage143 milesEngine5.7-liter LT1 V8Power260 horsepowerTransmission4-speed automaticDrive typeRear-wheel driveExterior colorBlackInterior colorMedium Grey leatherWheels16-inch 5-spoke alloy wheelsSuspensionShort/long arms front, live axle rearBrakesFour-wheel ventilated discSteeringHydraulic recirculating ball steeringCurrent bid$35,000Interested in this car? While the nameplate returned eventually, it just wasn't the same with the later model being front-wheel drive. These final B-Body Impalas are the kind of car you can't build anymore, and they serve as a nostalgic reminder of simpler times. This ultra-low mileage version does pose a question, though: Do you drive it and stretch its legs, or keep the miles low for as long as possible? Either way, it's pretty cool to have Lord Vader's car in your driveway.Spexx/Bring a TrailerSpexx/Bring a TrailerAdvertisementAdvertisementView the 9 images of this gallery on the original articleThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Sep 27, 2026, where it first appeared in the Car Buying section.
