We compare the two engine choices made available in the Toyota Land Cruiser to see which one offers the most in the terms of efficiency.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is an institution, there’s no denying that. Its rugged dependability and offroad prowess are combined with a level of luxury that has defined the model range since the 90s when it started defining itself as a luxury offering.
For the longest while, you had the choice of a 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine and a 3.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel, producing 202- and 120 kW respectively. In October 2020, the tiring 3.0 D-4D was retired and replaced with the more efficient, and more powerful 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesel, as found in the top-spec Toyota Hilux.
Here’s how the engines stack up in the bid for best economy.
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2.8 GD-6 (2021 onwards)
While the displacement has been decreased from 3.0-litres to 2.8, the replacement power plant produces more power and returns better fuel consumption figures. This refines offering features a ball-bearing turbocharger, improved fual and air flow through the cylinder head and injection system as well as a new balance shaft to ensure silky-smooth operation. Power comes in at 150 kW with torque registering 500 Nm. It is also now paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Average fuel consumption – combined cycle:
7.9 l/100km
Estimated fuel range:
1897 km
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 3.0 D-4D (Pre-2021)
Previously available in TX, VX and VX-L trim, the 3.0 was the most common engine offering. This 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine produces 120 kW and 400 Nm torque and was mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
Average fuel consumption – combined cycle:
8.5 l/100km
Estimated fuel range:
1765 km
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4.0 V6
The 4.0 V6 is available in VX and VX-L trims but not in the entry-level TX trim. It’s a 4.0-litre quad-cam V6 with dual VVT-i for improved performance and efficiency. It too is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
Average fuel consumption – combined cycle:
11.5 l/100km
Estimated fuel range:
1327 km
