Watch This C3 Corvette Drag Race a Vintage Buick GS
Bringing back lots of memories in the process.
Classic Drag Race
While newer vehicles tend to dominate the drag strip these days, we personally enjoy watching their older (and oftentimes slower) counterparts tear up the track. Thankfully, there are quite a few vintage sports car owners willing to drag race those artifacts, including this very nice C3 Corvette that recently lined up against a Buick GS in this video from Cars and Zebras.
Big Block
On one side, we have a 1970 Corvette, which is equipped with a 454 cubic-inch V8 with 10.25:1 compression and a stout output of 390 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, the big V8 sends its power back to a 3.73-geared rear end for brisk acceleration.
Buick Power
The 1968 Buick GS, on the other hand, is equipped with a 400 cubic-inch V8 that generates a lesser 340 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, which it sends to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox and 3.90 gears.
More Power, Less Weight
Aside from its big power advantage, the C3 Corvette is also lighter than its GM counterpart, tipping the scales at 3,778 pounds versus 3,970. As one might imagine, those things show up in the actual drag race between these two vehicles as well.
Even Start
Running in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, these two cars line up to see which is quicker, much of which boils down to driver skill. Interestingly, both get off to a pretty even start as well, though the Corvette begins to pull away once the two reach the 60 foot mark.
Pulling Away
From there, the Corvette just keeps pulling away, putting its weight and power advantage to good use. The big Buick lags behind, but this is no blowout by any measure – just a good old fashioned close race between two old pals.
No Real Loser
When the two vintage machines cross the line, the C3 takes the win with an E.T. of 13.86 seconds at 101 mph, compared to the GS, which tripped the lights at 14.31 seconds at 99 mph. It’s an easy win for the Corvette, but let’s be honest – are there really any losers when you’re driving two cool cars like these?
