The all-electric pickup earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the Rivian R1T its Top Safety Pick+ award, the organization announced on Friday. Accompanying the announcement is a video released by the IIHS showing the all-electric pickup truck acing its small-overlap front crash test.
Earning the Top Safety Pick+ award is no small feat. In order to be considered, a vehicle must earn a rating of “Good” in all six of the IIHS’s crashworthiness tests, which include small overlap driver-side, small overlap passenger-side, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. Additionally, the vehicle must be available with an active safety system that prevents collisions rated advanced or superior by the IIHS in regards to vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.
The R1T was able to do all of those things, plus earn a “Good” rating for its headlights and and its LATCH child restraints ease of use.
“The crew cab pickup meets all the requirements for the higher-tier award,” the IIHS said in a statement. “All trims come with good-rated LED projector headlights and a standard front crash prevention system that earns superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.”
