Varryx has spent the past few days in Fiorano to get a closer look at the camouflage model. In the process, the latest 296 GT3 has been recorded from all angles so we could get a closer look at all of its details.
The video gives us some clearer understanding of the changes which have been implemented into the new GT3 spec Ferrari machinery. It looks as though most of the bodywork has been revised with a new front bumper, equipped with dual centre mounted spotlights and a full LED matrix in the headlight housing replacing the projector lenses of the road going model. It has also done away with the electric folding mirrors in favour of more aerodynamic options.
The front and rear track have both been widened, which means that both fenders, fore and aft have required redesigning to fit the chunky rubber into the wheel wells. A small NACA duct sits just in front of the rear wheel on the bottom portion of the fender, this is presumably for brake cooling.
At the rear, the intricately beautiful centre mount exhaust has been done away with for a pair of circular tips that are more reminiscent of the road going F8 and 488 models. A large vortex inducing rear diffuser fills the base of the car while the widened arches are clearly prominent with a cavity showing where the original bodywork ends and the new kit begins. Expectedly, there is a big wing perched as far back on the rear as possible.
Most importantly the twin-turbocharged V6 (employed here without hybrid assistance as per regulations) seems to be making all of the right noises, so GT3 racing is in good hands for the next few seasons until the Prancing Horse ushers in a new challenger.
Two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE Pro class winner Alessandro Pier Guidi who was part of the test driver team had this to say: “I am delighted with how the two days of testing here at Fiorano went. The Ferrari 296 GT3 proved to be a delightful and precise car to drive. Obviously, at this stage the work focused on testing the systems and essential reliability, and we are pleased with the data we gathered.”
