The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the world’s most popular SUVs, delivering on premium design, space for the family and that highly desirable raised driving position. You can already get your Tiguan in multiple flavours to suit your desires, but what if you want something that’s a little more sporty? The Tiguan X is a China-only model that mimics other fastback SUVs, just on a smaller scale.
We’ve seen plenty of these coupe-esque SUVs of late in the form of the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe, not to mention the recently revealed Audi Q5 Sportback. They retain their tall stature, but sacrifice some practicality for a much more dynamic look. The Volkswagen Tiguan X made its debut at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show in a big to offer such a fastback design to the mainstream.
You won’t be seeing the Tiguan X in the UK, but the SUV is a significant departure from the typical recipe in terms of design. A raked roofline transforms the regular car’s boxy shape into something more executive. Speaking of being executive, this model is actually based on a long wheelbase variant of the SUV – another model we do not get in Europe.
The Volkswagen Tiguan X was developed as a join venture between VW and SAIC, with the car to be built in China. Several engine options will be available with a 183bhp 2.0-litre TSI petrol kicking off the range. Top of the tree is the 199bhp 380 TSI 4Motion which also features a 2.0-litre petrol, but incorporates all-wheel drive. Cog swapping in most models will be taken care of by a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.
Could the Tiguan X work in Europe? We think that it has potential, but for now it remains forbidden fruit.
