Special-edition hot hatch will be limited to just 2500 units globally and it won’t be coming here
The Volkswagen Polo GTI hot hatch is turning 25 this year and, to celebrate, VW has announced the 2023 Volkswagen Polo GTI Edition 25 – a Europe-only limited-edition outfitted with a bunch of unique cosmetic and cabin upgrades.
The look is kicked off by the black 18-inch ‘Adelaide’ alloy wheels and continues with a black roof, matching wing mirrors and unique side decals, all of which allude to the black and red leather premium sport seat trim and glossy black trim bits in the cabin.
A ‘One of 2500’ logo is embedded into the sill panels to remind drivers and passengers of the car’s exclusivity, with the message reiterated by a ‘25’ steering wheel emblem.
No changes have been made to any of the Polo GTI’s mechanical set-up, meaning the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine still churns out 152kW/320Nm – 5kW more than the locally-offered Polo GTI – but the special-edition does ride 15mm lower than standard on retuned ‘sport’ suspension.
The whole package is kept in check by an XDS electronic diff lock, while transmission duties remain handled by the familiar seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
“Volkswagen has a rich heritage and the Polo is one of our most iconic vehicles”, said VW board member for sales, marketing and after sales Imelda Labbé.
“GTI fans are very important to us and our anniversary model is a way of marking this milestone together with them: celebrating 25 years of power, performance, sportiness, and fun driving in the Polo class.”
European buyers will have the choice of Pure White, Kings Red Metallic, Reef Blue Metallic, Smoke Grey Metallic, Deep Black Pearl Effect or Ascot Grey paint colours for their new Polo GTI Edition 25.
