All-electric ID. Buzz-based campervan confirmed, but it won't arrive until 2025 at the earliest
Volkswagen has announced that it will spin-off an all-new California camper based on the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Buzz that will be launched in 2022.
Confirmed during a Volkswagen supervisory board meeting, the 2022 Volkswagen ID. California will be made at VW’s Hannover factory that will also produce both the ID. Buzz and closely-related ID. Cargo delivery van.
Sadly, for those with an appetite for a zero-emissions camper, the ID. California is not due to land until the “second half of this decade”, according to senior VW execs.
Few details surround the ID. California, but it’s a safe bet that it will be technologically identical to the ID. Buzz.
That means it will be based on the MEB architecture and come powered by a range of batteries that will stretch from 48kWh to 111kWh.
Both single- and dual-motor powertrains should be available, with the cheapest rear-drive version to come with a 150kW electric motor mounted on the back axle.
Top-of-the-range models should be able to cover around 560km between top-ups.
Commenting on the decision to expand the California range to include a camper based on the ID. Buzz, VW Commercial boss Carsten Intra said the follow-up to the T6.1 Transporter-based camper would “combine the ongoing trend towards mobile leisure arrangements with sustainable CO2-neutral mobility”.
