Sketches provide a glimpse at next year’s ID.3 makeover, with new interior tech
- Expected in mid-2023
- More convenient infotainment
- Improved interior materials
First launched in 2019, the Volkswagen ID.3 electric family hatchback is already due for a mid-life facelift. It’s set to arrive in 2023, and VW has released design sketches previewing both exterior and interior changes. These will not only keep the ID.3 fresh in the face of brand-new rivals like the MG4, but they’re also aimed at making the plug-in Volkswagen easier to live with.
Externally, changes to the ID.3 already distinctive design will be subtle. Bolt-on bodywork like the bumpers will get a new look, with large vertical air intakes at either side, that will likely form a curtain of air along the sides of the car to help improve efficiency. The headlights will also get a new look, along with the rear lights. Facelifts normally usher in new designs of alloy wheels too, which should help distinguish the facelifted ID.3 from the old car.
While efficiency figures haven’t been released, it’s said the WLTP range could change by up to 2%. Assuming this is an increase, it’s likely the new ID.3 will be able to manage around 270 miles between charges with a 58kWh battery and 201bhp electric motor.
In the cabin, the central touchscreen will grow from 10 to 12-inches; this is also set to gain new infotainment technology and software designed to make it easier to use – addressing one of our main criticisms of the existing car. Imelda Labbé, Volkswagen Marketing Board Member, said: “The new ID.3 demonstrates our commitment to quality, design and sustainability. The design has matured, and we’ve upgraded the materials used in the interior.”
“The needs of our customers are always front and centre for us. That’s why we listen carefully and focus on gearing our product portfolio to their requirements.”
While the sketch doesn’t give too much away, it does appear there’s now a stitched seam in the fascia, suggesting new soft-touch materials will make their way into the interior. There also appears to be a new head-up display, and the central console now has two cup holders. VW says there’s also a removable luggage compartment floor to boost practicality.
Optional technology will include Travel Assist, which can help take the stress out of driving over long distances. This is a version of the same semi-autonomous tech announced for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz MPV, which uses ‘swarm data’ gathered from other vehicles to help guide the car even when there are reduced road markings. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s Park Assist Plus feature can park the vehicle autonomously. When equipped with a ‘memory function’ it can also remember complex parking procedures over a distance of up to 50 metres, such as reversing into a tricky driveway and then a garage.
The facelifted ID.3 is already available to order in Germany in Life, Business, Style Max and Tour trim levels, despite having not been fully revealed. The current car is only available in entry-level Life specification in the UK, but we expect the facelifted model to bring a wider trim selection and a slightly higher base price when it goes on sale in 2023.
