It's just a concept for now, but only 25 people need to sign up to turn it into reality.
Delta4x4 has unveiled a new concept that it hopes to bring into production, namely an off-road version of the Volkswagen Golf R.
If you've been a fan of Volkswagens for decades, you may recall the Mk 2 Golf Country, a factory-produced off-roader based on the humble hatchback in its second generation. This appears to follow a similar recipe, jacking up the suspension of the latest eighth-generation GTI and enhancing its capability with roof racks and additional lighting.
It may be no more than a concept for now, but if the tuner gets enough interest, Delta4x4 hopes to build 25 of these. With low volumes, the price moves in the other direction, and the estimation for the package currently sits at €35,000 (over $38,200). Ouch.

What would you get for the money? A long waiting list, for one thing. If production goes ahead, it will take between six and nine months to develop the entire package, which includes raising the car by 80 millimeters/3.15 inches. You may not have noticed immediately, but the fenders are also wider than stock (both front and rear), allowing for a wider track and more suspension travel. All-terrain tires wrapped around wheels that may or may not be beadlock capable are also evident, and the rood rack houses essentials like jerry cans, sandboards, a spare wheel, a shovel, and water containers.

Finally, we have new lighting elements on both the hood and the roof rack, new badges front and rear, and for some strange reason, a red stripe in the front fascia, as if this were a Golf GTI. It's safe to assume that the tuner would give the build underbody protection and some upgrades inside, but will that be enough?
While we applaud the idea of a budget 911 Dakar or a modern-day Golf Country, we hope the tuner finds a way to make the Haldex system off-road friendly. Just because all four wheels are driven does not mean that the car will be handy off the beaten path.
Then again, this is the company that turned a Tesla into a trail-busting toy, so we're sure Delta4x4 will do its homework once more.
