Vietnam’s largest, and still growing, conglomerate, Vingroup, is headed by Chairman Pham Nhat Vuong. It all started when Vuong moved to the Ukraine in 1993 and founded Technocom Corporation, a company producing dehydrated food products including noodles. Well, his noodles became so popular the company was eventually purchased by Nestle. Last year, Vuong had a net worth of US$7.5-billion, making him the wealthiest person in Vietnam and 344th on Forbes list of billionaires.

In 2001, Vuong returned to Vietnam and started Vinpearl, a resort complex. Then came Vinhomes, which develops mid- to high-end commercial and residential properties. The two were merged to form Vingroup in 2011. Since then, the company’s holdings have mushroomed into a corporation with a capitalization of US$39-billion, as of the end of 2021.

Today, Vingroup has an interest in everything from bricks and mortar to nuts, bolts and batteries, and it touches just about everything between the bookends. Driving.ca was given a tour of its core holdings.

Vingroup’s vacation and resort destinations are best described as the company’s hospitality tentacles — VinPearl has 45 complexes and over 18,500 rooms and villas dotted throughout Vietnam. They are split between urban hotels and vacation resorts, which have the look and feel of an all-inclusive property you’ll find in the Caribbean. Interspersed in the resorts are three theme parks, two amusement parks, two safari parks, an aquarium, and four golf courses.

Vinpearl Resort and Spa Ha Long sits on its own island and features a castle-like hotel and a seriously large 1,200 square-metre swimming pool. It also has three beaches and gives easy access to Ha Long Bay. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a seascape of some 1,600 limestone formations topped by rainforests. Cruising through these gentle giants is an unforgettable experience.

Vinpearl Nha Trang is another island resort and home to one of VinWonders playgrounds with an 880-metre zipline, amusement park, and the Tata Show. The latter uses sophisticated high-resolution projection technology, lights, smoke and fireworks to produce a memorable show. While the backdrop remains the same, the lights and projection technology change the look and feel throughout the show.

Vingroup’s real estate arm has developed 27 urban complexes located close to Vietnam’s major cities. Vinhomes Ocean Park is a 35,000-residence complex complete with the largest man-made lake in Vietnam. It also has a saltwater lake ringed with a white sand beach.

Part of the Ocean Park complex is VinUniversity (VinUni). It opened in January, 2020, and is now home to 468 students from 11 counties. These students rank in the top four-percent in the world with an average SAT score of 1,453. However, the university has the capacity to host 3,500 students and is home to some of the most modern facilities in the world. Moving forward, the goal is to transform the campus into one of the top 50 universities in the world. To achieve this lofty goal, VinUniversity has aligned itself with Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania.

VinFast is newest of Vingroup’s core ventures. It’s an automotive start-up manufacturer that opened in 2017. It took just 21 months to go from rice field to a vast production complex that builds electric cars, e-scooters and electric buses. At this point, the facility has the capacity to build 250,000 EVs, 250,000 e-scooters and 3,000 e-buses per year.

VinFast is set to build a second manufacturing complex with an initial investment of US$2-billion in Chatham County, North Carolina. In phase-one, it will be capable of manufacturing 150,000 vehicles, including EVs, e-buses and batteries. As with the original facility, the time frame for the project is very short — the company will break ground this year and plans to have vehicles rolling off the assembly line in July, 2024.

By 2026, the company will have the capacity to build 950,000 units a year. On the EV side, this will include the VF 8 and VF 9 along with future products like the VF 5, VF 6 and VF 7 that will complete the portfolio.

While the assembly line started building VinFast’s Lux range of cars and SUVs, including a mid-sized sedan, a mid-sized SUV and the President SUV with a V8 engine, the initial plan was short-lived. VinFast quickly switched to EV production.

The first was the VF e34, a small electric crossover developed for the Vietnamese market. Earlier this year, it gathered the first 100 owners together for a drive from Bach Dang Ha Long to Cape Sa Vi, the most northeastern part of Vietnam. While there was lots of pomp and ceremony to mark the occasion, the overwhelming impression was just how young the typical EV buyer is in Vietnam. To an old crow they looked like kids!

This overview really only scratches the surface, as Vingroup’s umbrella also includes a group of seven hospitals and four clinics (Vinmec), a public transport infrastructure using electric buses (Vinbus) and it has interests in the technology sector, including VinAI. This part of the corporation develops driver monitoring systems, around-view cameras and a Level 2 self-driving system set to feature in the VF 8 and VF 9 — this is the steppingstone to a Level 3 system. VinAI is based in Vietnam, but has branches in the US and Australia. The depth of the corporation even runs to the televisions found in every one of its resort rooms. Full-spectrum is an apt description.
