The onslaught continues. Fresh off the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its first Canadian dealership in Toronto’s tony Yorkdale Mall — Montreal and Vancouver to follow shortly — Vietnamese start-up VinFast took the wrappers off two more electric vehicles at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show.
Unlike the already-released VF 8 and VF 9, which definitely fall into the sport-brute category, the VF 6 and VF 7 will definitely trade on cuteness. Shaped in conjunction with Italy’s Torino Design, VinFast says both marry a “surprising” level of advanced technology with a driver-oriented cabin experience.
Of the two, the compact VF 6 will surely be the more accessible, its B-segment 4,238-millimetre overall length and short 2,730-mm wheelbase promising inner-city manouevrability and easy parking. And sporting 174 horsepower in its Eco guise; and 201 hp in the top-of-the-line Plus trim, the VF 6 would seem very much an urban warrior. Both versions are powered by a single motor up front driving only the front wheels.

The VF 7, meanwhile, while being equally comely, rides on a 110-mm longer wheelbase and stretches some 307-mm more from stem-to-stern, and so is firmly in the mid-sized segment. It’s also 70 mm wider, so expect a significantly more expansive cabin. The Eco version of the VF 7 is powered by the same 201-hp single motor powertrain as the range-topping VF 6, but its Plus version gains a motor out back, giving the VF 7 Plus 349 ponies and an all-wheel-drive powertrain.
No other details on the cars are currently available — including battery size, range, and charging times — other than that the Eco versions make do with cloth seating and steel roofs; and the Plus models go upmarket with vegan leather seat materials and panoramic sunroofs. We’ll keep you updated as we get more information.
