Electric-vehicle manufacturer VinFast has announced Canadian pricing for its first two SUV models. Reservations are now open, and you can even get a week at a resort as part of the deal.
The VF 8 five-seat midsize crossover has an estimated range of 504 kilometres on a charge, and will start at $51,250. The three-row, full-size VF 9 SUV is expected to go 550 kilometres and begins at $69,750.
Both make 402 horsepower (300 kw) and 472 lb-ft of torque. The company said the VF 8 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.5 seconds, while the larger VF 9 takes one second longer than that. Both include eleven airbags, and driver-assist technologies like highway driving assist, automatic lane-changing assist, and remote parking.
Canadians can reserve a vehicle for a fully-refundable $250 deposit. From now until April 5, 2022, those who do will be considered “pioneer customers” and will receive extra benefits. These include an e-voucher to take $3,500 off the price of a VF 8 when it arrives; or $6,000 off a VF 9; a mobile charger for the vehicle; and free driving technology and connectivity packages. VinFast is based in Vietnam, and pioneer customers will also get a seven-day tour and seaside villa accommodations for four, although you’ll have to buy your own flights.
VinFast Canada said it has already received more than 300 reservations for the two models. The company will be selling its vehicles through online purchases and a company-owned network.
VinFast established its manufacturing facility in 2017 and started out building cars under license from BMW and General Motors, along with e-scooters for the Vietnam market. In 2021 it launched a compact electric SUV for Vietnam, and developed the VF 8 and VF 9 for global markets, debuting them at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November.
