Possibly the last electric car to launch in Malaysia this year is the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, which is essentially a fastback version of the all-electric XC40. Sold in one variant only, named the ‘Ultimate’, the C40 Recharge Pure Electric fetches a price of RM 288,888.
Powering the Malaysian-spec C40 is a dual motor setup that makes 408 hp and 660 Nm. Its fastback profile contributes to a lower drag coefficient and reduces the overall weight of the car, thus making it slightly faster than the electric XC40. 0-100km/h acceleration of the C40 is done in 4.7 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds quicker than the XC40.
As for battery and range, the C40 Recharge Pure Electric comes with a 78 kWh battery that provides 451 km of range (WLTP). The battery can be charged at a maximum rate of 150 kW with DC fast charging and this charges the car from 0 to 80% in 28 minutes. AC charging can be done at a maximum rate of 11 kW, and this charges the car from 0 to 100% in 8 hours.
Straight on from the front, the C40 looks exactly the same as the XC40 as it shares the same front panel and front bumper. It is only when you shift slightly to the left or right that you notice the car’s fastback profile. The C40 that is launched in Malaysia is the 2023 global facelift version, but we’ll stick to calling it the 2022 model in respect of its launch year in Malaysia.
The updated Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, which we get, doesn’t have dual-tone colour schemes. ‘Ultimate’ variants of the C40 (and XC40) in other regions get 20-inch wheels, but for Malaysia, the C40 (and XC40) only gets 19-inch wheels with the five-double spoke design. The tyres are a set of Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres.
Inside, the C40 adds a large fixed panoramic sunroof which the electric XC40 does not get. The interior of the C40 is 100% leather-free and has interesting ’topography’ trims on the dashboard and front door panels that are inspired by the topography of the scenic mountains in Sweden.
Like the XC40 (B5 and Recharge Pure Electric), the Volvo C40 gets ‘Google Built In’ and Volvo’s ‘Digital Services Package’ that includes Google Assistant, Google Playstore, Google Maps, and data for said services. The C40 comes with a 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty, an 8-year/160,000 km EV battery warranty, 5 years of Volvo On Call, and 5 years of Volvo Inclusive Service.
