Used (W205) Mercedes-Benz C-Class - Symbol of success for Civic money, is there a catch?

In the automotive world, not many brands possess aspirational status, Mercedes-Benz is certainly one of them. The three-pointed star carries with it a certain prestige that is sometimes enough to overlook many things, like comfort for example. It’s a personal theory, at least, on the success of the W205 .

While yours truly isn’t a fan of the W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class to say the least (for reasons highlighted in its ), the target market certainly does not echo that sentiment.

This writer has two close relatives who bought the W205 C-Class based on its brand cachet alone, which speaks volume on the C-Class’s pull.

And that pull might just be stronger when you consider a used example can be had for around RM 140k. For that sort of money in the new car market, you’d be looking at a – a fantastic car but it’s not a Mercedes, is it?

So, if you’re keen on venturing into the used car market and the W205 C-Class is on your radar, here’s what you need to know before buying one.

How many variants were there?

Quite a few, and since the facelifted models are still above the RM 200k mark, we’re focusing on the pre-facelift models.

There were a number of updates and spec revisions throughout its lifecycle here, which can get convoluted if each was explained chronologically. So here’s the list of variants for the pre-facelift W205 C-Class that were officially offered in Malaysia:

• C180 Avantgarde
• C200 Avantgarde/AMG Line
• C250 Exclusive/AMG Line
• C300 AMG Line
• C350e Avantgarde/AMG Line

In terms of powertrain, the C180 gets a 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 156 PS/250 Nm, while the C200, C250, and C300 has a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 184 PS/300 Nm, 211 PS/350 Nm, and 245 PS/370 Nm respectively.

The C350e is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with the same engine output as the C250 albeit boosted by an electric motor to a combined output of 279 PS/600 Nm.

All variants of the early models used a 7-speed automatic transmission. Later models from 2017 onwards were updated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, except for the C350e.

Which one to go for?

Well, there’s no sweet spot of the range so to speak as it depends on your budget, so we’ll point out what you should look out for instead. There are a number of differences between each variant, but perhaps only two items that are worth highlighting.

First up, keyless entry. It’s only available in the C250 and above. That’s right, even if other variants have a push start button with keyless function, you’d still have to unlock the car via the remote.

The second item would be the AMG sports suspension, which lowers and stiffens the ride. So while the AMG Line exterior does look rather attractive, there’s a trade-off in terms of ride quality.

Bear in mind that ride comfort on standard suspension already isn’t much to shout about in the first place. But do give it a try, perhaps you might find it perfectly acceptable.

As for the C350e PHEV, we’ve been advised by a Mercedes specialist that it is best avoided due to its complexity and cost of repairs should any hybrid-related items fail.

How much are they going for currently?

At the time of writing, early examples of a C200 from 2014 and 2015 are averaging around RM 140k to RM 150k, while the C250 hovers around RM 160k. The rarer pre-facelift C300 can be found for around RM 180k to RM 190k.

What are the common problems for the W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

The aforementioned Mercedes specialist we spoke to is Danny Tan. He runs an independent workshop called Benze Elite Auto in Puchong.

According to Danny, one of the most common problems for the W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, regardless of variants, is the cooling coil leakage in the air-conditioning system. An early symptom is that the A/C blows cold air on one side (driver or passenger) only and eventually there’ll be no cold air at all.

To remedy that, the cooling coil, condenser, and expansion valve have to be replaced. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) replacement parts and labour will cost within RM 3,000, while original parts will be double of that, around RM 6,000.

Another common problem is also due to leakage, specifically coolant, caused by the thermostat. We were told that a replacement will set you back around RM 1,000.

The alternator and fuel pump are also said to be common faulty items. Original replacement parts for both will cost around RM 2,000.

Other than that, suspension noise is another common complaint amongst owners. There are a number of factors that can cause strange noises but more often than not, it's due to worn bushes and joints on the control arms. To tackle this, there are a few options to consider depending on budget.

Owners may opt to replace the bushing alone, which costs around RM 400 per piece including labour. Alternatively, an OEM replacement part for a lower control arm costs around RM 500. An original part meanwhile, will cost in the region of RM 1,100.

Thankfully, the pre-facelift W205 C-Class in Malaysia was not offered with Airmatic suspension (save for the C350e, but are we still talking about that?), which has its own problems stacked on top of the squeaky bushings and joints. Without it though, it’s one less item to worry about.

What about maintenance cost?

A regular service with an oil change including filter at Benze Elite Auto costs around RM 600. For earlier models with the 7-speed automatic transmission, servicing the 7-speeder costs RM 800. Meanwhile, a transmission service for updated models with the 9-speed gearbox costs around RM 1,600.

At the same time, the rear differential fluid is recommended to be changed as well, which costs around RM 200. Cost for other parts like spark plugs is RM 75 per piece (RM 300 in total) and air filter for about RM 90.

Conclusion

While the common problems stated above can sound daunting, it’s mostly due to wear-and-tear or negligence. A well-maintained unit will continue to serve its owner well, so be sure to ask for a full service and repair history. If there isn’t, it’s advisable to simply walk away.

And while you’re walking away, perhaps a competitor from Munich might pique your interest? We’re talking about the F30 of course, and the PHEV variant isn’t placed under a taboo. It might even be a steal at the moment.
