Yet the Karoq combines all this with real premium appeal. Not only is the cabin smartly designed, it’s also solidly constructed and full of top-notch materials. This is a feeling that’s enhanced by the advanced tech, plus you benefit from confidence-inspiring safety aids.

On the move, the Skoda serves up a superb balance of ride and handling. Its compact size means it feels at home in the city, and it’s a relaxing companion on the motorway.

There’s no weak link in the engine line-up either, although the 113bhp 1.0-litre petrol’s punch and economy make it a top choice. And unlike some SUV-shaped rivals, there’s even the option of four-wheel drive in the Karoq.

Silver – Citroen C3 Aircross

Last year’s winner takes the runner-up spot this time. Its quirky styling, practical cabin and focus on comfort make the C3 Aircross a talented second-hand small SUV. And of course it still represents impressive value.

The exterior oozes French flair, but it’s the interior that’s the real highlight. Its blend of funky design and family-friendly versatility makes it the sort of car that can deal with anything you throw at it. From its sliding rear bench to the numerous cubbyholes, the Citroen feels like it’s been designed from the inside out.

True, it’s not as fun to drive as some, but the soft suspension, light controls and decent refinement mean that few rivals are as relaxing. Factor in a range of eager and efficient engines and it’s not hard to see why the distinctive C3 Aircross makes such a sensible and stylish choice. Vive la différence, as they say in France.

Bronze – ​​Volvo S90

With three Used Executive Car wins on the trot, the S90 is something of a phenomenon, and it remains one of the second-hand bargains of the decade. Yet with its sleek looks, top-notch quality and comfort, the Swede doesn’t feel like a cut-price option. In fact, thanks to the cool minimalism of its interior, the S90 feels a cut above its German rivals. There’s more space than most as well, with those in the back enjoying near-limousine luxury.

It’s an incredibly relaxing car, too, due to its hugely supportive seats, supple ride and excellent refinement. But that’s not to say the Volvo is dull to drive. With its accurate steering, strong grip and decent body control, it feels surprisingly agile when hustled through a series of corners.

Then there’s the smooth and punchy four-cylinder engines, plus the powerful and frugal plug-in hybrid. Factor in prices starting at just £12,500, and it’s hard to find a chink in the S90’s armour.
