- Well, this confirms it: GMC is working hard on a Sierra HD AT4X
- Expect gonzo off-road capability from this heavy-duty truck
- Judging by these pics, it seems a reveal should happen this year
As quickly as GMC began mining the credibility its AT4 sub-brand had built for itself, it began wringing every dollar of profit out of the burlier AT4X offshoot. Our spies caught this camouflaged prototype plying the roads of Michigan, perhaps in final preparation for a reveal next month at the Chicago Auto Show.
A healthy amount of eye-crossing obscurement covers this truck’s front and rear fascias, suggesting those areas will be newly designed for the AT4X in order to provide approach and departure angles worthy of the badge. It’s too dark to see up under this test vehicle, so we’re left to wonder if the HD AT4X will deploy a beefy set of DSSV dampers cribbed from other off-road trucks in the GM portfolio.

If engineers have found them unsuitable for application in a heavy-duty truck, then perhaps they’ll team up with a brand like Fox or Bilstein. Speaking to the former, it sure seems like the driver’s-side rear shock has blue paint on its lower mounting bracket. That could be just your author’s eyes, however, since he is rapidly aging into a knackered old goat.
These eyes are also questioning the extra access flap in the camo just aft of the rear passenger side door, one which usually provides entry to the fuel filler during testing. However, the current Sierra 2500HD has its filler neck on the driver’s side — and changing that detail is no small (or cheap) task. Perhaps this is just a wrap re-used from another project. The flap just south of this area along the camo’s edge is likely for the truck’s bedside step, a feature recently introduced on production pickups.
Headlights and other such elements look very similar to the present model year, with a skiff of LEDs across the top of its peepers as a lighting signature, plus a series of lights in the grille “nostrils.” It’s tough to tell if the GMC badge is moved even further towards the hood than today’s truck.
The General has found plenty of success with its AT4 and AT4X lines at GMC and the ZR2 line at Chevy. If customers are willing to front the cash, it only makes sense (and profit) to keep making more variants.
