Who has the right of way here?
SINGAPORE
A video uploaded on the social media platform Facebook on 17 January 2023 has sparked mixed reactions from drivers about which car really has the right of way. The video shows a white Toyota Vios flipping upside down after colliding with a Porsche Panamera at Ubi Avenue 3, blocking off two of the left-most lanes.
A Toyota Vios weighs 1,095kg, while a Porsche Panamera weighs 1,760kg. Given the German luxury car’s heavier weight, it was no surprise the Vios lost out when going toe-to-toe upon collision.
The majority of the comments to the video focused on who should be blamed. Most critics accused the Porsche driver of filtering left without first waiting for traffic to be clear. Additionally, the Porsche committed to filtering left without accelerating up to exit the lane, expecting the approaching Toyota to slow down and give way. However, the driver of the Toyota Vios also made no attempt to slow down or take evasive action as the car barreled into the Porsche, which suggests that he was driving distracted.
If you find yourself in such a circumstance on the roads here, the first thing you should do is scan the road ahead, check your rearview mirror, and always indicate your intentions before changing lanes. It is essential not to overlook your blind spots. Never change lanes at intersections. Plan your lane changes before and after junctions to have a smoother drive.
