Toyota is one of the most popular and best-selling automakers in the world, and when it comes to affordable car brands, Toyota is at the top. The Japanese auto giant has a long list of affordable and great cars, including the Corolla and the Camry. In fact, according to Consumer Reports, Toyota makes five of the best cars from 2023 that are under $30,000.
Consumer Reports’ list of the best new cars and SUVs for under $30,000
As Consumer Reports wrote, the pandemic has propelled car prices to new highs, but many good options still cost less than $30,000. The car critic separated the list into three segments: small sedans, midsize sedans, and small (subcompact to compact) SUVs. Asian automakers, unsurprisingly, dominated the lists, with Toyota winning in two of those three segments.
The Corolla Hybrid won in the small sedan segment, and the Camry Hybrid won in the midsize sedan segment. Meanwhile, the Subaru Forester won in the best small SUV segment. In addition to these three winners, Consumer Reports also listed a bunch of cars that were “Other Top Models,” and Toyota once again had a lot of entries. Here’s a look at the five Toyota models that ultimately made the list.
1. 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid
The Toyota Corolla Hybrid starts at about $23,000, replacing the Corolla’s standard engine with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. It gets 134 hp, and it’s paired to a CVT. This setup allows the compact sedan to get 50 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on highways, for 47 mpg combined. On top of that, Toyota offers all-wheel drive on the Corolla Hybrid, making it a more compelling option.
2. 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Toyota Camry Hybrid starts at about $28,000 and gets a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. It gets 208 hp, and it’s also paired to a CVT. Despite being a midsize sedan, the Camry Hybrid’s powertrain gets better fuel economy than the Corolla Hybrid. It gets 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on highways, for 52 mpg combined. That said, the Camry Hybrid doesn’t have the option of AWD.
3. 2023 Toyota Corolla
Unsurprisingly, the standard version of the Toyota Corolla is also a great car. It starts at about $21,500 and comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 169 hp. Like the hybrid version, it’s paired with a CVT, and all-wheel drive is an option. The car’s standard engine gets 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on highways, for 37 mpg combined.
4. 2023 Toyota Prius

Toyota gave the Prius a redesign for the 2023 model year, and it’s as good of an option as ever. On top of a new look, the new Prius also has a new hybrid powertrain. It’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that gets 196 hp. The Prius gets about 57 mpg combined, and all-wheel drive is offered. Pricing information hasn’t been released for the new Prius, but it should cost about $27,000.
5. 2023 Toyota Camry
The regular Toyota Camry also made Consumer Reports’ list as it’s a solid midsize sedan that starts at about $26,000. It comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 203 hp and also has an optional 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 that gets 301 hp. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic, and it gets 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on highways for 34 mpg combined. Unlike the Camry Hybrid, though, the gas-powered Camry offers all-wheel drive.
