The AutoTrader team recently added a Toyota Hilux Raider X to our long-term test fleet! Here are some of the details surrounding this limited edition model!
At AutoTrader, we have a team of motoring journalists dedicated to producing content to service our ever-expanding automotive marketplace users. As such, we test various vehicles and are often given products for extended periods to get better acquainted with them. The latest addition to our fleet forms part of the best-selling vehicle range in South Africa, the Toyota Hilux. The Japanese brand recently dropped off a Hilux in limited edition Raider X guise for the team to test over three months.
What is a Raider X?
The Raider X is essentially a Raider model with some aestehic enhancements. It boasts new bi-tone, diamond cut 17-inch alloy wheels, matte black over-fenders with red inserts, a new chrome grille inset bar with Hilux insignia, Raider X badging, a flat black styling bar, an integrated tonneau cover, a rubberised carbo bed and a spring-loaded tailgate to round off the exterior changes. Ten exterior colours can be chosen, with our test unit looking resplendent in Chromium Silver.
The interior looks identical to a regular Raider but with a ‘Raider X’ plaque near the gear lever. Features-wise, there’s a TFT multi-info display inset within the instrument cluster, a colour touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a multifunction steering wheel. Seeing as though all Raider X models are equipped with 4×4, other features such as Hill Assist Control, Trailer Sway Control, and a Limited Slip Differential.
Under the hood
Toyota’s 2.4-litre GD6 diesel motor is powering the Raider X with 110kW and 400Nm of torque. The engine is available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox, with fuel consumption claimed at 7.6 litres per 100km for the manual and 7. 7 litres per 100km for the automatic.
Off-road specs
The Raider X features a selectable 4×4 system complete with a low-range transfer case, a rear locking differential, and a ground clearance figure of 286mm, all features we plan on exploiting off of the beaten path during our time with the car. Other notable figures include a 3 500kg braked towing capacity and a payload of 830kg.
Safety
The Hilux range was crash-tested in 2019 by the ANCAP programme. It achieved a 5-Star rating with 96% for adult occupant safety, 87% for child occupant safety, 88% for pedestrian safety and 78% for its safety assistance systems. There are seven airbags: Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Assist Control and Trailer Sway Control, ISOFIX child-seat attachment, and front and rear Park Distance Control (PDC).
