While a Toyota Hilux Hydrogen gets ready in the UK, a Toyota Hilux Electric is under development in Thailand. On display in concept form as the ‘Toyota Hilux Revo BEV’ at the Bangkok International Motor Show 2023, the electric pickup truck, when it eventually hits the market, should challenge the Ford Ranger Electric. Just like the Blue Oval model, the markets of interest initially could be in Europe.
Design
The Toyota Hilux Electric is a concept, more of a technical preview than a series-production precursor. Toyota should launch a Hilux Electric in the ninth generation.
The Toyota Hilux Electric is a conversion of the eighth-generation model, which is eight years old. The Hilux Electric has a single-cab layout, contrary to most electric pickups that are dual cab.
A redesigned front fascia with headlamps with blue accents, a smooth plastic panel covering almost the entire grille area, and a gloss black bumper garnish with a horizontal fin on the outer ends (but without fog lamps) give the electric model a unique identity. Its bumper is identical to that of the ICE model. The exterior looks like a pre-2020 electric vehicle, but we think Toyota will introduce the production model with a lot more appealing features in the ninth generation.
The production Hilux EV could be based on a modified version of the TNGA-F platform and be a first of its kind at Toyota.
Interior
The interior (see on Paultan) of the Toyota Hilux Electric, is almost the same as that of the donor. The main difference is the installation of a dial-type electronic gear selector in the floor console. There’s not even an LCD instrument cluster, which is a pretty common feature in new-age EVs. The production version we expect in the ninth generation should have an upscale design and more advanced features that EV buyers have come to expect.
Specifications
There’s no word on the specifications of the Toyota Hilux Electric. All we know is that it’s got a CCS2 charging port behind a push-open flap on the front fender. European customers may expect at least 225 miles of WLTP range from such a pickup. Another rational customer expectation would be a 150 kW or higher DC fast-charging rate that lets customers charge the battery pack from 0 to 80% SoC in half an hour. The U.S. should get a Toyota Tacoma EV with better specs and more advanced technologies in this segment.
The Toyota Hilux Electric has a CCS2 charging port. Toyota has not offered information on the prototype’s range or battery capacity.
