In a mega announcement, CEO Akio Toyoda revealed a Mega plan for a disruptive EV future for both Toyota and Lexus
Toyota has put its grand plan in the electric vehicle sector in front of the world. It consists of 30 electric vehicles by 2030 increasing the count from the earlier announcement of 15 vehicles by 2025.
That’s not all, the Japanese automaker has also announced that it will invest 2 trillion yen or about 17 billion USD in battery vehicle technology to develop new cars. Toyota is not new to the electric vehicle market. It has the expertise and also helped manufacturers like Tesla with the powertrains. But Toyota never went full-fledged and watched the developments from the sidelines. But that is going to change soon.
Toyota has unveiled 15 EV Concepts
Toyota president Akio Toyoda unveiled as many as 15 electric vehicles from widely diverse segments. Bearing the Lexus and Toyota badges, these cars include a range of new SUVs, commercial vehicles, off-roaders, and also a Lexus LFA-inspired electric supercar.
The brand plans to sell some 3.5 million battery-electric cars by 2030. Toyota said that it needs to reduce the emissions as much as possible. Akio Toyoda also said that the brand will achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.
Toyota bZ-based EV line-up
The bZ-badged vehicles from the manufacturer will follow the brand’s new bZ$X SUV. It will be a compact SUV with a silhouette of Aygo X. There will be a mid-size saloon that will target first-time car buyers. There will be a full-sized SUV as well. The cars under the bZ EV line-up will be reasonably priced mass-production models.
Some of the cars under this series will be based on the existing models and a few concepts also resemble the current models including the Toyota Hilux and Lexus NX. Most of the models will be all-new, bespoke models based on the new e-TNGA EV platform developed alongside Subaru.
Lexus BEV line-up
While not revealing all the details, Toyota said that Lexus will be present in all the segments with an electric car by 2030. The brand will become an all-electric car brand in Europe, North America, and China by 2030. Lexus will stop manufacturing combustion engines completely by 2035.
Lexus will first bring out its bespoke EV – the RZ crossover in 2022. It will be based on e-TNGA platform architecture as the Toyota Bz4X and Subaru Solterra. Following the RZ crossover, Lexus will come out with an electric supercar as well.
