Starting out as a flagship model in the Toyota lineup of 1955, the Crown nameplate has become commonly associated with luxury and innovation. More than 67 years on, the new Crown brand has had to evolve to accommodate a variety of segments and these are what is on offer.

South Africa, along with about 40 other countries will be receiving the new Crown models from Toyota but instead of the nameplate existing in only one vehicle, Toyota have released several new iterations which will boast the DNA of “innovation and limit-pushing” which has been ensconced from the first generation model.

More than 67 years on, the automotive market is significantly different from when the first Crown broke cover. Toyota has therefore made the decision to create four completely new models which will each boast the historic name but cater for a different customer. This was after the Toyota development team determined that there would need to be a “Crown for a new era.” This means that the new Crown models will include a Crossover, Sedan, Sport and Estate (SUV) in the lineup which will all share similar underworkings and components.

Speaking of which; a completely new TNGA platform has been developed by Toyota which provides a highly rigid but lightweight structure for the chassis which uses McPherson struts at the front with a multi-link setup at the rear.

Powering the lineup of new Crown models is a novel 2,4-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged motor which also employs hybrid technology. No performance statistics on the powertrain have been provided yet but Toyota have used a bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery for the first time. Watch the embedded explanatory video on the hybrid system below.

The models will receive a raft of standard features which includes Toyota Safety Sense system while the Crossover will be equipped with Toyota Teammate which includes a suite of driver-assistance technologies.
The snazzy looking new Crown models will make their way into South Africa from Q1 of 2023 and form part of Toyota South Africa Motors’ continued New Energy Vehicle (NEV) product rollout.
