It isn’t a secret that some states have been better equipped to handle EVs than others. However, since electric cars are increasingly popular, more public EV charging stations are popping up daily. These are some of the states with the fastest electric vehicle charger growth. The states with the most Level 3 fast chargers are also listed, which includes the Tesla Supercharger Network.
Top 10 states with the fastest electric vehicle charger growth
iSeeCars’ newest study examined which cities and states have led with the fastest electric vehicle charger growth. More chargers are crucial to the exponential growth that electric vehicles are supposed to have in the next few years. iSeeCars says that the number is projected to go from 6% to 30% of all new vehicle sales, a 500% increase.
There are currently 150,000 EV charging stations in the US, with most being Level 2 chargers. These add around 10 or 20 mines in an hour of charging. Level 3 fast chargers can add 10 to 20 miles a minute, offering a full charge in an hour or less. Twenty-eight thousand current chargers are Level 3, and 17,000 belong to the Tesla Supercharger Network.
Below are the top 10 states with the fastest electric vehicle charger growth, with North Dakota leading the way with a 94.5% improvement. In 2017, there were 83,882 residents for each charger, now down to 4,611.

That’s followed by Massachusetts and Oklahoma, which have also had record growth. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Fresno-Visalia in California were some of the fastest-growing metro areas for EV charging stations.
The best states for Level 3 fast electric vehicle chargers
Braking that down even further, below are the top 10 states with the fastest electric vehicle charger growth for fast chargers, specifically. These are important for drivers as Level 3 chargers can charge the battery fully in under an hour (for the most part).

Oklahoma also greatly improved fast charger growth, with a 93.8% improvement. In 2017, there were 103,456 residents per fast charger; in 2022, that is down from 6,452 residents. West Palm Beach and Ft. Pierce, Florida, saw a 99% improvement in Level 3 chargers between 2017 and 2022. San Antonio, Texas, saw a 98.8% growth in the same time frame.

After The White House announced it would accelerate the buildout of electric vehicle charging networks, things sped up. Tesla recently opened its US Supercharger and Destination Charger network to non-Tesla EVs. This will have added 7,500 chargers by the end of 2024.
Hertz and bp announced the companies would build a fast-charging infrastructure to accelerate EV adoption. Pilot Company, General Motors, and EVgo are adding 350 kW chargers at Pilot and Flying J travel centers. And most recently, 7-Eleven has a new charging app called 7Charge that makes it easy to charge up and get back on the road.
If your state hasn’t the fastest electric vehicle charger growth yet, 2023 could change things. New EV charging stations are popping up daily nationwide, which is only expected to increase exponentially.
