If you drive in Malaysia, going through one (or more) toll booth is a common occurrence. Toll booths are usually found on the Expressway and Highways and depending on the type of toll that you pass, you can either pay via Touch n’ Go card, SmartTAG or with RFID. For those who are still questioning why they have to pay toll, most roads in Malaysia are built with the government’s money that are raised from taxes. Tolls are like a tax that applies only to the use of that particular road. The money raised through these tolls allow new roads to be built, maintained and upgraded without raising taxes from the general public. Open Tolls

At an open toll, you pay a fixed amount based on your vehicle classification at the toll booth found on a certain part of the highway. Here are the expressways/highways that use the open toll system.

Closed Toll

If you are approaching a closed toll system, you will need to collect a non-physical ticket (via Touch n’ Go, SmartTAG, or RFID) before driving on the expressway. When you exit the expressway, you will then pay a certain amount based on how far you have traveled and your exit. Here are the tolls that use the closed toll booth system.

Toll rates vary depending on the road you are using, as they are each privately owned. There was an increase in charges as of October 2016. In order to give you an idea of prices some examples of specific expressways/highways and their prices have been included below:

  • The Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE): RM2.50
  • The Maju Expressway (MEX): RM2 –RM3.50
  • The Kuala-Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK): RM6 at the Gombak toll plaza and RM3.50 at the Bentong Toll Plaza

The toll rate at each toll plaza is based on the vehicle you drive. The bigger your vehicle, the more you pay.
