It won’t be hitting showrooms until later this year (sometime in the third quarter, we’re told) but pricing for the Walkinshaw-modified Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme has already dropped in line with other details of the vehicle.
The first thing to know is that not all Mitsubishi dealers will be selling the vehicle. According to Walkinshaw Group management, every dealership was offered the chance to retail the beefed up, high-end Triton, but not all of them have taken up the offer.
The other headline is the price. At $71,990 before on-road costs, the Triton Xtreme goes almost dollar-for-dollar (or even a bit more) with the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6 ($70,190) Toyota HiLux Rogue ($70,200) and the Nissan Navara Pro 4X Warrior ($70,015 for the automatic version).
The price of the Xtreme model is also a big jump up from the $57,490 of the Triton GSR on which the Xtreme is based.
The GSR base brings with it Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, privacy glass, Halogen fog lights, heated and folding exterior mirrors, LED headlights and a height and reach adjustable steering column.
The extra $14,500 for the Xtreme gets you the advanced, remote-reservoir dampers, bash plates, Goodrich ATR tyres, fender flares, specific alloy wheels, an LED light-bar, a sports bar in the tray and the requisite decals and badging to visually set the vehicle apart.
Dampers aside, the Triton is more or less mechanically unchanged from the Triton GSR. That means a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine making 133kW and 430Nm and a six-speed conventional automatic transmission.
Mitsubishi’s Super-Select all-wheel-drive system remains, offering the choice of two and four-wheel-drive as well as incorporating drive modes to suit varying conditions.
The Triton Xtreme claims a GSR-identical official combined fuel-consumption number of 8.6 litres per 100km and the fuel tank holds 75 litres of diesel.
Safety is covered off by autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian identification, lane-keeping assist and warning, blind-spot monitoring, hill start and descent control, trailer-stability and brake-force distribution. There’s also a logic-based system designed to detect pedal-error. The Triton is fitted with seven air-bags including a driver’s knee-bag.
Although it’s a modified vehicle, the Triton Xtreme still carriers Mitsubishi’s conditional 10-year/200,000km on all standard parts with Walkinshaw Auto Groups adding the same cover for the modified bits and pieces.
