It’s only being offered as a hatchback, but the RS trim makes a return

The WRX STI may be long gone, but that doesn’t mean that Subaru is dropping the famed Impreza nameplate any time soon. Making its debut at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, the sixth-generation Impreza ditches the sedan body style to be only offered as a hatchback, a shame for fans of the former. In return, the RS trim makes a comeback; it had been an enthusiast-grade offering back in the day for the US market before the WRX came out.

If you’ve ever wondered how the latest Crosstrek would look like if it was lowered and all its cladding removed, well, this is the answer. It’s a sporty design that works well with the brand’s bolder design language, but if you want the most aggressive-looking of them all, the RS offers features like black trim bits, upgraded LED headlights and fog lights, and dark-gray 18-inch wheels.

The cabin also receives the latest features from higher-end Subarus, like the 11.6-inch Starlink infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, dual-zone climate control, and EyeSight driver-assistance suite.
The RS trim also comes with added goodies, like paddle shifters, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, a power sunroof, and blind-spot detection with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.

Underneath the hood, you have two engine choices: a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-four that makes 152hp and 196Nm for the base and Sport trim levels, and a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-four with 182hp and 241Nm for the RS. All trims are mated to a CVT, and all have the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive drivetrain. Opt for the Sport and RS trims, and you get the SI-Drive mode selector and a sport-tuned suspension. The Impreza also rides on an upgraded Subaru Global Platform that has 10% higher torsional rigidity for improvements in handling and ride quality.
Prices haven’t been announced yet, but this model isn’t a US-exclusive only, so other markets will be receiving it soon after. Motor Image Pilipinas hasn’t offered the Impreza sedan ever since it was quietly discontinued back in 2020, so we hope that the distributor looks to bring it back soon with the latest model.
