The Mercedes-Benz performance division, Mercedes-AMG, is known mostly for its incredible, hand-built V8 and V12 engines, and the machines that cradle those engines. Even though AMG is most widely associated with internal combustion powertrains, the performance division isn’t shying away from the looming electric future. We’ve already seen AMG versions of Mercedes-EQ products, but Mercedes-AMG unveiled its Vision AMG, which shows what we can expect from a battery-electric car wearing an AMG badge.
Mercedes-AMG points to the axial flux electric motor as the heart of the Vision AMG. The company didn’t reveal how many of these motors we can expect in a high-performance AMG EV or what output we can expect, but it’s probably safe to say that Mercedes-AMG isn’t forgetting the brand’s performance heritage. The company also doesn’t include this concept’s battery figures but does note the upcoming AMG.EA platform will use a high-performance, high-voltage battery. This AMG.EA platform will underpin future AMG-exclusive electric vehicles.
The wild concept also hints at some of the features and styling that could hit the road when AMG rolls out its EV lineup. It seems like lighting will only become a bigger trend, and the Vision AMG adopts a fully illuminated faux grille and surround. The rear of the Vision AMG is accented by the six circular taillights that seem to emulate exhaust pipes. The overall shape, too, is something that you can almost expect to see from AMG when it branches out into EV manufacturing. Judging by the shapes you can see from Mercedes-Benz, this rounded design language will likely make its way to the AMG family.
As for when we’re going to see an AMG-branded EV? Well, Mercedes-AMG points to the near future: 2025. This isn’t a huge shock, considering Mercedes-Benz’s big push for a battery-electric presence, but that’s still a fairly ambitious timeline to roll out an AMG EV. Still, with the growing competition with luxury and performance EVs, it’s probably a good idea to jump in as quickly as possible.
