As they always say, money is the solution to all life’s problems (not really). Your favourite carmaker doesn’t make a car you like? If you have enough money, you can always ask them to make one specifically for you. That is basically the story of how the Pagani Huayra Codalunga came about, which was created at the behest of two collectors, costing EUR7 million (approx. RM32 million) each.
The name Codalunga means ‘longtail’ in Italian, and it’s said to be inspired by the Le Mans race cars from the 1960s. The two collectors approached Pagani to make a longtail version of the Huayra sometime back in 2018, and they worked with the company’s Grandi Complicazioni special projects division for over two years just to get the design right.
The differences are obvious even at first glance, with an extended rear deck that’s 360 mm longer than the standard car. There’s also a reworked front bumper with a widened grille intake and a revised splitter, while the taillights at the back are rearranged into single file, rather than the usual L-shaped design.
You’ll also realise there are no grille covers at the rear, because it gives you the perfect view to the signature quad-exit ceramic-coated titanium exhaust system. The entire exhaust system weighs just 4.4 kg, and the car as a whole – despite its extra body panels – weighs even less than the standard Huayra itself, coming in at just 1280 kg.
While the exterior gets a large makeover, the interior of the Codalunga remains mostly unchanged from the standard Huayra, except for a unique choice of woven leather and nubuck upholstery to match the design trends of that era. Exterior colours, too, are limited to either matte or semi-matte to bring out the car’s minimalist design lines.
Under the bonnet of the Pagani Huayra Codalunga is a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12, taken directly from the Huayra Imola. It makes a whopping 840 hp and 1,100 Nm in total, with power sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed sequential gearbox.
“All Pagani projects are born from visions and dreams, and some of the most iconic and exclusive Pagani cars stem from the vision and dreams of clients. In 2009, this led to one of the most iconic Zonda models, the Zonda Cinque,” said Pagani Commercial Director, Hannes Zanon.
“Pagani Automobili is capable of developing these bespoke projects for single clients, much like the Coachbuilders in the ‘60s, but in compliance with today’s international homologation requirements.” Only five units of the Huayra Codalunga will ever be built, with all of them already spoken for.
