The U.S.-spec model is a year away, but the Fiat 500 is coming back to the American market in all-electric form.
FiatThe Fiat 500 as we knew it had a brief moment in the sun in the U.S, but that moment ended all the way back in 2019. In the years since, the brand has followed what has become a tradition for Stellantis brands undergoing major changes and narrowed its American offerings down to just the 500X. Now, finally, Fiat is expanding its lineup again with the return of the newest electric 500e city car.
The U.S.-spec 500e arrives in 2024, Stellantis announced Thursday, with the reveal of that particular car coming next year. Until then, Fiat will be offering a glimpse of three one-offs of the European model customized by Italian brands Giorgio Armani, Kartell, and Bvlgari at this year’s L.A. Auto Show.
We first saw the European model of the 500e in March 2020. That car has 112 horsepower and, thanks to a 42 kWh battery pack, an estimated WLTP cycle range of 199 miles. 0-62 mph is accomplished in a modest nine seconds, but an upcoming Abarth model confirmed back in March of this year should greatly improve performance. That Abarth will be shown later this month, but it is still unclear if the U.S.-market 500e will get that option.
Fiat offered an electric variant of the last generation of 500 in some parts of the U.S, but that was a smaller-production model. Then-CEO Sergio Marchionne also famously told customers not to buy it as it lost the company $12,000 per sale. Perhaps this one’s entry into the U.S. market will be a bit more celebrated.
