In addition to this all-electric GT, DeLorean eventually plans to offer a coupe with a V-8 and a hydrogen-powered SUV.
DeLoreanDeLorean has been gone a long time. So long, in fact, that the future predicted in the Back to the Future franchise that took the original DMC-12 from quirky memory to cultural icon has already come and gone. A new company with the DeLorean badge is planning on changing that this year, a process that starts with a sports car.
This is the DeLorean Alpha5 concept. It’s just a concept for now, but it previews a would-be production grand tourer with massive two-row gullwing doors and ItalDesign-penned lines. The doors and choice of design house are the two biggest connections to the original DMC-12.
As this is a halo car for a brand being launched in the 2020s, this is an all-electric car. That means it’s avoided the Renault V-6 family entirely for an unspecified electric powertrain joined to a battery Motor1 quotes at over 100 kWh. In addition to a 150 MPH limited top speed and a 3.4 second run to 60, the goal is for that to be good for some 300 miles of range.

The Alpha5 concept officially debuts at Pebble Beach in August, with a production car planned to follow in 2024. In an interview with Autocar, CEO Joost de Vries specifies that the first run will be 88 limited edition, track-only cars mean to “serve as an avatar for an associated NFT,” but that will be followed by a production run of cars that would be eligible for actual legal registration and use.
Although the brand is set to debut with an electric car, this is not necessarily an all-electric brand. In addition to the Alpha5, de Vries also told Autocar that the full DeLorean roster should include a sports car powered by a conventional V-8 and a luxury SUV powered by hydrogen. It is an ambitious plan that would effectively require developing three separate platforms with completely different engineering needs.
