Get the binoculars, that looks like a Wrangler down there.
The Ford Bronco Raptor is going to be an absolute monster. We've seen it tearing up off-road trails with its turbocharged engine and massive tires, and it sounds menacing. As you'd expect of an off-road-biased machine like this, ground clearance is very important when you're aiming to put the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 in its place. But how practical will it be on city streets? Well, let us put it this way: we wouldn't let 16-year-old student drivers learn to park in it.
A recent post to the Bronco6x Facebook group shows that the Bronco Raptor towers above the competition, literally.
Development of the awesome overlanding machine is wrapping up now, and reports claim that the vehicle will become available from next summer. Its performance will likely come courtesy of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that motivates the Explorer ST SUV, and we're expecting at least 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, which will naturally go to all four wheels.
We expect the interface to be a 10-speed automatic, and a seven-speed manual seems unlikely. Naturally, we can expect Fox high-performance off-road shocks, huge tires, and various skid plates, but don't hold your breath for a two-door version any time soon.
Aesthetically, we know that the Wrangler rival will get a unique grille, not unlike that seen on the F-150 Raptor, along with special bumpers with added tow hooks, a wider body, huge wheel arches, and redesigned side steps that (hopefully) could double as rock sliders too. As for pricing, nothing has been revealed yet, but the most expensive version of the regular Bronco has a starting MSRP of just over $59,000. We expect that it will end up being priced somewhere above the F-150 Raptor ($64,000) and below the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 (a little below $75,000). Of course, numerous factory options and accessories will be offered to take the price higher than our estimate of around $65,000.
